Slattery Leads Johns Hopkins to 3-1 Win at #5 Messiah

GRANTHAM, PA – In an early season battle of top-five teams, it was second-ranked Johns Hopkins that came out on top in a 3-1 win at fifth-ranked Messiah. Graduate student Lila Slattery had a hand in all three goals for the Blue Jays as they improved to 3-0 on the season, while the Falcons slip to 1-1.

Slattery put Hopkins on the board just 2:06 into the second quarter, when she banged home a loose ball inside the circle. The Blue Jays doubled their lead late in the third quarter, capitalizing off a penalty corner. Freshman Deedee Golla took the corner insert and passed down to Slattery just inside the circle. She fired a low shot just past the pads of Falcons' goalie Eva Hancock and junior Grace Waldeck redirected it into the cage.

Messiah got on the board 4:46 into the fourth quarter as the home team scored off a corner. Kelsey Heltzel tipped in a shot from Jenna Lutz and Hopkins' lead was down to 2-1. The Blue Jays pushed their lead back to two five minutes later when Slattery converted a penalty stroke.

Sophomore Aubrey Kilgore made three saves to earn the win for the Blue Jays while Hancock finished with three in the loss. Hopkins outshot Messiah, 11-9, and penalty corners were even at nine apiece.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, September 7 as the Blue Jays host the 10th-ranked Rowan Profs. The non-conference contest is slated for a 12:00 pm start at Homewood Field.

Notes: Hopkins wins its sixth straight over Messiah as the Blue Jays improve to 6-3 all-time against the Falcons • This is the Blue Jays' 12th win over a top-five team, including seventh under head coach Jane Wells
