ROANOKE, VA – The 17
th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team jumped to a 3-0 lead at the half and never looked back in a 4-0 win over Roanoke in its first game at the Roanoke Invitational Saturday evening. The win improves the Blue Jays' record to 1-1-1 on the year, while the Maroons slip to 0-2-1.
Â
The Blue Jays needed more than 19 minutes to break through, but then scored twice in a span of just under two minutes to grab a quick 2-0 lead and take control of the game.
Â
Playing forward in transition, senior
Katie Sullivan collected a lead pass along the wing and sent a low cross into the box that junior
Maria Romo-Nichols poked into an open net in the 20
th minute to get the Blue Jays on the board.
Â
Just under two minutes later, senior
Juliana Taxter made the Maroons pay for a failure to clear the ball from danger as she chipped one over the head of Roanoke goalie
Grace Suchy from 22 yards out to give the Blue Jays a two-goal lead.
Â
That margin held until the 36
th minute, when a
Katia Chiampas corner floated over Suchy's head to the back post, where
Olivia Redden drove it home to give the Blue Jays a 3-0 lead they would carry into the break.
Â
The Blue Jays would tack on a
Carrie McIntire goal in the 56
th minute off another assist from Sullivan to close out the scoring. The Johns Hopkins defense never let the Maroons seriously threaten in the second half as they limited Roanoke to just one shot after halftime.
Â
Johns Hopkins held decided advantages in shots (24-3) with Suchy making six saves.Â
Tia Harrison and
Allyson Shick each played a half in goal for the Blue Jays to combine for the shutout; Harrison made two saves in the first half while Shick was not forced to make a save over the final 45 minutes.
Â
Johns Hopkins will make a quick return to the pitch as the Blue Jays will take on Lynchburg on Saturday, September 8 in their second game at the Roanoke Invitational (4:30 pm).
