BALTIMORE, MD – Visiting Rowan scored twice in the second half and went on to beat 24
th-ranked Johns Hopkins, 3-1, Sunday afternoon in non-conference action. The Blue Jays slip to 2-2-0 on the season while the Profs improve to 2-1-1.
Rowan got on the board in the 27
th minute off a long strike from Joey Kurak. The Profs played a long ball into the Blue Jays' end and goalie
Loucas Costeas came out to play it. The ball took a funny bounce and Johnny Troiano was able to head the ball wide to Kurak, who fired a shot into the open goal from 25 yards out. Six minutes later, Ryan Gale played a through ball to Troiano, who took one touch and then scored on a low shot just inside the right post.
Troiano pushed Rowan's lead to three in the 55
th minute with his second of the afternoon. Gil Ferreira slipped a ball through a pair of defenders to Troiano just past midfield. He carried the ball into the box and then picked the bottom left corner to make it 3-0.
Hopkins ended Rowans' bid at a shutout in the 81
st minute after
Ian Whamond was taken down in the box.
Jonathan Cui stepped to the spot and beat Dylan Aportela on the penalty kick to make it 3-1. The Blue Jays continued to press in the final nine minutes but could get no closer.
Hopkins outshot Rowan 19-8, and had a 7-0 advantage in corners. Costeas finished with two saves while Aportela made one.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, September 11 as the Blue Jays host the St. Mary's Seahawks. The non-conference contest is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start at Homewood Field.
