BALTIMORE, MD – Visiting Christopher Newport beat Johns Hopkins, 85-66, in non-conference action at Goldfarb Gym Wednesday night. The Blue Jays slip to 5-6 overall while the Captains improve to 14-3 with their fifth straight win.
Trailing 37-28 coming out of the half, Hopkins got a
Jeb Williams' layup to spark a 10-5 spurt that saw the Blue Jays pull within four.
John Windley led the way with four points and
Brian Johansson capped the run with a pair of free throws to make it a 42-38 game with 17:28 to play.
Jason Ofcarcik answered with a bucket in the paint to ignite a 9-0 spurt as the Captains pushed their lead back to 13 just over two minutes later. Hopkins cut the deficit to eight with a triple from Johansson and a layup from
Wyatt Eglinton Manner at the 12:04-mark.
Another Ofcarcik layup ignited a 20-10 CNU run as the visitors pushed their lead to 18 with 4:40 on the clock. The Captains went 6-of-10 from the field and 7-of-8 from the line over the nearly seven-minute stretch. Ofcarcik and Toa Hollenbeck combined for 17 of CNU's 20 points during the run.
Eglinton Manner hit a hook shot and Ofcarcik answered on the other end to make it a 73-55 game with 4:02 left. Four straight points from
Tanti Felli kick-started a 9-3 spurt that pulled the Blue Jays back within 12 at 2:14. Christopher Newport responded with a 9-2 run to end the game and take the 85-66 win.
Hopkins jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the game's opening two minutes with buckets from
Charlie Jackson, Felli and Williams. A Jahn Hines pull-up three ignited a 23-4 run that spanned nearly nine minutes and saw the Captains grab a 26-10 lead. Hollenbeck and Hines combined for 14 points during the run. Hopkins cut into the deficit with a 7-2 spurt, capped by a Eglinton Manner layup to pull within 11 at 6:32.
CNU sandwiched an Ofcarcik three-point play and a Ryan Derderian jumper around a Johansson layup and the Captains led 33-19 just two minutes later. Hopkins then closed the half on a 9-4 run, with four different Blue Jays scoring, to make it just a nine-point game at the break.
Eglinton Manner led the Blue Jays with a career-high 16 points to go with six rebounds. Windley finished with 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds while Jackson added 12 points. Ofcarcik led all scorers with 21 points and had a game-high 11 rebounds. Hollenbeck scored 18 and Hines added 13 points and five boards.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, January 11 as the Blue Jays open Centennial Conference play at Gettysburg. Tip-off at Bream Gym is slated for 3:00 pm.
