BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins sophomore
Irene Sanchez Burgueno scored a goal in each half to power the 22
nd-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team to a 2-0 non-conference victory over visiting Mary Washington at Homewood Field Wednesday night. The win is the third straight for the Blue Jays, who improve to 7-3-1 with the victory. Mary Washington had a four-match unbeaten streak snapped and slips to 7-2-1 with the loss.
Â
After Mary Washington controlled possession for a good part of the middle of the first half, it was the Blue Jays with the two best chances of the opening frame, the second of which they were able to capitalize on to open the scoring.
Â
Working off a corner, Hopkins'
Natalie Smith headed one that appeared to be ticketed for the back of the goal in the 31
st minute, only to have Mary Washington's
Ellen Shine keep it out as she chested it away to keep the game scoreless.
Â
Less than two minutes later, the Blue Jays would convert in transition to grab a one-goal lead. Senior
Maria Romo-Nichols pushed forward down the flank to right left of Mary Washington goalkeeper
Emily Orn. Romo-Nichols was able to gain the endline and worked towards the middle before slipping a pass back into the middle of the box. There, Sanchez Burgueno one-timed a shot just under the crossbar past a defenseless Orn to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead they would carry into the break.
Â
The Eagles had three first-half shots, including a rocket of the foot of
Katie Britton in the 23
rd minute that sailed just over the crossbar, but after the early possession advantage favored the Eagles, Britton's shot would Mary Washington's last of the first half as the Blue Jays took control.
Â
The one-goal lead held for more than 25 minutes in the second half despite heavy pressure from the Blue Jays. Freshman
Lena Olbrys nearly broke through in the 49
th minute, but her shot from close range found the post and Orn was equal to offerings from
Carolyn Johnson in the 62
nd and 64
th minutes to keep it a one-goal lead.
Â
The Blue Jays would double the lead when Sanchez Burgueno poked home her second of the night off a corner kick in the 74
th minute. Graduate student
Kei Kitamura's corner drifted to the middle of the box, where senior
Ella Macko was able to head it towards the goal in traffic. Sanchez Burgueno was able to get a foot on the loose ball and direct it through a defender and past Orn, who was sprawled on the goal line, for the insurance goal that sealed the victory.
Â
The Blue Jays held a 19-5 advantage in shots, including an 18-2 margin over the final 65 minutes, and collected nine of the 11 corners in the game. Freshman
Ella Kruntchev notched her third solo shutout of the season as she turned away three Mary Washington shots that were on frame. For her part, Orn was strong in goal for the Eagles as she made six stops on the night.
Â
Sanchez Burgueno becomes the third Johns Hopkins player in as many games to score a pair of goals as Olbrys turned the trick at McDaniel and Johnson matched her at Haverford in the Blue Jays' last game.
Â
Overall it is the third consecutive shutout for the Blue Jays and the starting defense of Macko,
Annie Isphording,
Tatum Adamson and
Carolina Chao marked its sixth straight game of allowing six shots or less.
Â
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, October 4 when the Blue Jays welcome Bryn Mawr to Homewood Field for a Centennial Conference game against the Owls (3 pm).
