LANCASTER, PA – Johns Hopkins took the lead early in the third quarter and held on for a 2-1 win over host and 17
th-ranked Franklin & Marshall Saturday in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays win their 10
th straight as they improve to 11-1 overall and 5-0 in the conference. The Diplomats fall to 9-3 on the season and 2-2 in the Centennial.
Hopkins struck first, cashing in on a penalty corner just over two minutes into the game.
Ada Farmer took the insert from
Sophia Albano and hit a low, hard shot from the top of the circle.
Kaitlin Coward tipped it into the top of the cage at 2:14 for her third of the season. The lead was short-lived as Franklin & Marshall tied the game at the 4:41-mark.
Aubrey Kilgore made a save on Hannah Fitzgerald, but Caitlin Hoover was able to collect the rebound and lift it over Kilgore and inside the post.
The score remained tied for a little over 29 minutes, and it was the Blue Jays that finally broke through.
Jenna Halpin took a pass from
Caeli Robinson, off another Albano corner, and fired a pass to the back post, where
Grace Waldeck redirected it in. The goal is the 26
th of her career and she is now tied for 12
th in school history.
The Diplomats stepped up the pressure in the fourth quarter, earning four penalty corners, including two in the final 35 seconds. The Blue Jay defense and Kilgore held firm and Hopkins earned the win.
Kilgore finished with five saves in three quarters while
Jessica Lapidus made one save in one quarter. Meghan Dole made a pair of saves for the Diplomats. Hopkins had a 16-13 edge in shots and 11-7 advantage in corners.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 15 as the Blue Jays host the McDaniel Green Terror. The Centennial Conference contest is scheduled for a 5:00 pm start at Homewood Field.
