ERIE, PA – Johns Hopkins took down Austin College, 25-11, and Washington & Jefferson, 14-4, on Sunday at Penn State Behrend. Hopkins wraps up its first weekend of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) play with a 4-0 record and improves to 15-4 overall.
Hopkins scored the game's first six goals, led by two scores from
Mason Hofmann, and led 7-1 with 34 seconds left in the first. Sebastian Scheier and Aidan Wade scored back-to-back goals, around the quarter break, for Austin to make it a 7-3 game.
Phillip Long answered with an even strength goal to spark an 8-1 run that spanned just six minutes and 16 seconds.
Patrick Rooney capped the run with 32 ticks on the clock to stake Hopkins to a 15-4 lead.
Preston Fiala scored with just one second left in the second to kick start a 5-3 spurt that pulled the 'Roos within 18-7 with 6:56 to play in the game.
Luke Mendelsohn scored an extra man goal just 14 seconds later to ignite 7-2 game-ending run.
Hofmann (4g, 3a) and
Andrew Lee (5g, 2a) led the Blue Jays with seven points each. Rooney tied his career high with four goals and drew two exclusions.
Max Blecher (1g, 3a),
Alec Baker (1g, 3a) and Long (2g, 2a) finished with four points each. Lee also drew four exclusions and
Kyle Pearson totaled seven saves and one steal in the cage. Lee and
Iason Mihalopoulos each scored their 100
th career goal in the win over the 'Roos.
Washington & Jefferson's Brody Souder scored 25 seconds into the game to put the Presidents on the board early.
Owen Bartlett answered 41 seconds later to spark a 5-0 Hopkins' run. Long capped the run with back-to-back goals to put the Blue Jays up 5-1 after one. W&J scored the first two goals in the second to pull back within 5-3 with 3:59 to play in the half.
Long scored an even strength goal at 3:34 to ignite a 9-1 run that spanned the final 19 and a half minutes. Six different Blue Jays scored during the run, including two each from Long, Bartlett and
Brody Mars.
Long (4g), Bartlett (3g, 1a) and
Daniel Palfi (1g, 3a) tallied four points each to lead Hopkins.
Chris Poisler finished with a career-high 16 saves and one steal in the win.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, November 2 at Navy. The non-conference contest is scheduled for a 2:00 pm start.
Notes: Hopkins is 4-0 in conference play for the first time in program history.
