BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's soccer team got six big saves from sophomore goalkeeper
John Ghanem and a second-half goal from senior
Scotty Coleman as the Blue Jays earned a 1-1 tie with eighth-ranked Dickinson at Homewood Field Wednesday night. The Blue Jays now stand at 4-6-6 overall and 2-2-3 in the Centennial Conference, while the Red Devils are now 10-0-6 overall and 4-0-3 in the Centennial.
Â
The Red Devils came out pressuring and the early push paid off in the 12th minute when they were able to convert. Playing from the high wing to the right of Ghanem, Dickinson's
Nicholas Dwamena sent a cross into heavy traffic in the middle of the box that
Saul Iwowo was able to head past Ghanem, who had come off his line to play the cross only to have Iwowo's flick find the back corner of the net.
Â
Both teams had chances over the final 33 minutes of the first half, but Ghanem was equal to three Red Devil offerings. On the other end, the Blue Jays'
Brendan Listzwan had his header smothered by
Nick Potter in the 33
rd minute and
Connor Wilkes had Potter leaning three minutes later when he drove the middle and pulled the trigger on the run, but he sent his offering just wide of the near post.
Â
Dickinson had a golden chance to double the lead in the 51
st minute when
Timi Omoniwa was able to shake a defender on wing and send a rocket towards the goal that Ghanem was able to punch away to keep it a one-goal game.
Â
The Blue Jays would break through in the 67
th minute when
Jacob Sardinha was taken down in the box and Johns Hopkins was awarded a penalty kick that Coleman converted by sending a low shot deep in the corner past a diving Potter.
Â
Johns Hopkins had a chance to grab the lead less than six minutes later when the Red Devils were called for a handball right at the edge of the top of the box, but Coleman's free kick hit the Red Devil wall and the rebound was cleared out of danger to keep things even.
Â
In a match that felt like there were more dangerous plays than the 17 combined shots the teams collected would indicate, the best chance late came off the foot of Dickinson's Jeremy Sallade, who pressured from the wing at the edge of the box and ticketed one for the top shelf that Ghanem was able to punch over the bar.
Â
Wilkes had a turn in the box in the 87
th minute, but Potter had him played perfectly. Two minutes later, Potter charged off his line and punched away a Blue Jay corner on what was the last scoring threat of the night for either team.
Â
Dickinson held a slight advantage in shots (10-7) and corners (7-4). Ghanem finished with the six saves – three in each half – and Potter had three stops on the night.
Â
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, October 25 when the Blue Jays welcome Muhlenberg to Homewood Field (12 pm). The Blue Jays will honor their seniors prior to the start of Saturday's game.
