BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins volleyball team dominated York in straight sets, 25-10, 25-15, 25-16, on Friday night at Goldfarb Gymnasium. With the victory, the Blue Jays improve to 13-3 on the season and extend their winning streak to six matches against the Spartans.
Hopkins got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 4-0 lead before York was able to get on the scoreboard. The Blue Jays built on their early momentum, pushing the lead to 10-3 with key kills from
Michela De Marzi,
Alice Yu,
Celine Ebert and
Simone Adam, along with a crucial block from
Helena Swaak and Yu. York's miscues allowed Hopkins to extend the advantage to 21-6. After a few more rallies, an emphatic kill from
Anna Pantano sealed the first set for the Blue Jays, 25-10.
The second set mirrored the first, with Hopkins storming out to a 5-0 lead, fueled by a pair of kills from
Jocelyn Pye. While York made things more competitive, pulling within three points at 8-11, the Blue Jays' offense proved too potent. A mix of kills from De Marzi and Ebert, a service ace from Swaak and more Spartan errors pushed the lead to 18-9. Though York showed brief signs of life, a kill from
Ella Wismer set up set point at 24-15, and Pantano sealed the deal with another kill, giving Hopkins a 25-15 win and a commanding 2-0 match lead.
The third set was more of the same as Hopkins jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, thanks to a pair of kills from Wismer and a block by Wismer and Pantano. The Blue Jays extended their lead to 13-3, showing no signs of slowing down. Though York managed to pull within seven at 12-19, Hopkins squashed any hopes of a Spartan comeback. After a few more rallies, Yu capped the match with her sixth kill, sealing the win at 25-16.
Defensively, libero
Nicole Tuszynski led the Blue Jays with nine digs, while Yu, De Marzi and Swaak each contributed two blocks at the net. Offensively, Pantano turned in a standout performance, hitting a match-high .625 with six kills.
The Blue Jays return to action on Saturday, October 4, when they open conference play with a match against Bryn Mawr at 1 PM.
