Ninth-Ranked Blue Jays Fly Past Bryn Mawr, 3-0

Hopkins Opens Conference Play with a Win; Improve to 14-3

BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins volleyball team opened Centennial Conference play in dominant fashion, sweeping Bryn Mawr in straight sets (25-15, 25-13, 25-16) on Saturday afternoon at Goldfarb Gymnasium. With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 14-3 on the season and extend their winning streak against the Owls to 27 consecutive matches.

The opening set began evenly, with the teams trading early points to a 3-3 tie. Hopkins quickly seized momentum with a three-point run sparked by an Alice Yu kill and a block combination from Yu and Anna Pantano. After a brief exchange, the Blue Jays broke the set open with an eight-point surge, highlighted by kills from Michela De Marzi, Simone Adam and Celine Ebert, along with an ace from Helena Swaak to go up 18-7. A Pantano kill set up set point at 24-12, and Yu capped off the frame with a kill to give Hopkins a 1-0 lead.

Much like the opener, the second set was tight early, tied again at 3-3. Hopkins responded with a four-point run behind a pair of kills from Pantano and another from Yu. Bryn Mawr briefly cut the deficit to four at 15-11, but the Blue Jays slammed the door with a dominant 9-1 run. Kills from Jordan Price, Ella Wismer, Pantano and Ebert, combined with a block from Pantano and Wismer, pushed the lead to 24-12. A Bryn Mawr error sealed the set, 25-13, putting Hopkins up 2-0.

Hopkins wasted no time in the third, racing out to a 5-0 lead with kills from De Marzi, Ebert and Jocelyn Pye, along with an ace from Pye. The Blue Jays kept their foot on the gas, extending the lead to 15-5 with offense from Pantano, Pye, Swaak and Emily Overtoom, while Pantano and Annika Anderson each added service aces. Ebert's kill made it 24-10 and gave Hopkins match point. Bryn Mawr rallied for six straight points to narrow the gap, but Ebert closed out the match with another kill, securing the sweep with a 25-16 win.

Defensively, Pantano led the Blue Jays with six digs, while Pantano, Wismer and Ebert each contributed two blocks at the net. Offensively, Ebert tallied a match-high nine kill on an outstanding .462 hitting percentage.

The Blue Jays return to action on Wednesday, October 8, with a match against Dickinson at 1 PM at Goldfarb Gymnasium.
