BALTIMORE, MD – The 22
nd-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team picked up its fourth consecutive win – all of which have come by shutout – as the Blue Jays topped visiting Bryn Mawr, 5-0, at Homewood Field Saturday afternoon. The win bumps the Blue Jays' record to 8-3-1 overall and 3-1 in the Centennial Conference. After starting the season with five consecutive wins, the Owls drop their sixth straight and slip to 5-6 overall and 0-3 in the Centennial.
Â
After controlling play through the first 13 minutes of action, the Blue Jays were finally able to crack Bryn Mawr goalie
Lily Blackman in the 14
th minute to grab a one-goal lead. Senior
Maria Romo-Nichols, working high in the box and shaded to Blackman's left, spun past a defender and slipped a feed to the middle, where junior
Caroline Marcus was able to connect cleanly and stick the game-opening goal inside the near post.
Â
The Blue Jays continued to pepper Blackman and nearly doubled the lead several times before finally breaking through in the 36
th minute. Sprung down the wing, sophomore
Kendall Frederick was able to chase down a lead pass and gained the endline before sending a perfect cross to the back post that junior
Sayre Burwell was able to redirect into the open net. The goal was the first of the season for Burwell and the assist was Frederick's first.
Â
The Blue Jays would tack on their third goal midway through the second half. Sophomore
Irene Sanchez Burgueno got free on the backside and sent a laser on frame that Blackman went low to steer aside, but junior
Lauren Fang was alone in the box to Blackman's right and she poked home the first goal of her career to push the lead to 3-0.
Â
Johns Hopkins would get another first-time goal-scorer in the 74
th-minute as junior
Kate Stone headed home a corner kick from
Lily Gaston to extend the Blue Jay lead to 4-0 and freshman
Maddie Burchfiel would close the scoring and make it three straight first-time goal-scorers as she fired home the first of her career on a rebound in traffic in the 87
th minute.
Â
Johns Hopkins had more than 70% of the possession in the game and held decided advantages in shots (28-0) and corners (14-0).Â
Stephanie Wyszkowski went the distance in goal for the Blue Jays and was not forced to make a save in collecting the shutout victory. This is the first time the Blue Jays have held a team shotless since September 21, 2024 at Muhlenberg.
Â
After playing the last two games at home, the Blue Jays will hit the road for another Centennial Conference game as they will travel to Gettysburg on Wednesday, October 8 for a matchup against the Bullets (6 pm).
Â
Notes: The assist for Romo-Nichols is her team-leading eighth of the year and she tied a school record with an assist in her fourth consecutive game. She has not had an assist in four consecutive games twice in her career to account for two of the six four-game assist streaks in program history. The assist was also the 24
th of her career and she is now alone in fourth place in program history in career assists.
