Johns Hopkins Competes at McClure and Swarthmore Invitationals

BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team split matches at Loyola's McClure Invitational and the Swarthmore Invitational this past weekend. At Loyola, the Blue Jays went a combined 2-2 in doubles and 5-1 in singles. Meanwhile at Swarthmore, the Blue Jays won four of six doubles and 11 of 12 singles.
 
On Friday against Towson, Hopkins dropped both doubles and singles matches. Claire Loftus and Isabel He dropped a 6-3, 6-1 match to Kiersten Tambe and Chandre Boshoff in doubles. In singles, Karah Li beat Gaia Montecchi 6-1, 6-4.
 
On Sunday against host Loyola, the Blue Jays split a pair of doubles matches and won both singles matches. In doubles, He and Sydney Langer lost a tight match to Christine Richiez and Emma Roeck 7-5, 6-4. Ava Li and Kamila Wong beat Emi Shivkumar and Elena Hartley 6-3, 7-6 (4). In singles, Sahana Sanjeev won 6-2, 7-5 over Mia Matriccino and Li defeated Liza Tankimovich 6-3, 7-5. Hopkins then took on Morgan State, winning the lone doubles match and all three singles. He and Karah Li prevailed in three sets over Tyler Williams and Julia Jeffrey in doubles. Wong dropped just three games in her win over Lauryn Hall. Loftus won 6-2, 6-4 over Damla Arslan and Ava Li won 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (7) over Marta Serra Carles.
 
On Saturday, Swarthmore took two of the three doubles matches, but Hopkins answered by winning five of six singles matches. Jay Xiao and Lia Melvin dropped a 6-4 decision to Erin Li and Lola Diaz. Loftus and Langer picked up a win for the Blue Jays, beating Paola Almeda and Kathleen Shiffer, 7-6 (5). He and Aubrey Zhou lost a tight one, 7-6 (3), to Veronica Komorek and Riya Rao. Loftus won a hard-fought match 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) over Erin Li. Ava Li beat Lisa Messier 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (9). Langer won 7-5, 6-2 over Diaz and Sanjeev won 6-2, 6-1 over Uma Pogribevsky. He lost just two games in her win over Shiffer while Hannah Kideckel pulled out a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (4) win over Zhou.
 
Later in the day versus Haverford, Hopkins lost a total of just one game in a sweep of the three doubles matches. Wong and Loftus won 6-1 over Jolie Zink and Aarti Prochnow. Ava Li and Melvin shutout Kirsten Close and Abhi Menon, while Karah Li and Sanjeev did the same over Erika Phanord and Sriya Krishnan. In singles, the Blue Jays lost just one set as they swept the singles matches. Wong won 6-3, 6-2 over Zink and Karah Li beat Prochnow 6-2, 6-3. Sanjeev earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Adelaide Kreutel and Melvin took her first set 6-0 and was up 1-0 when Mallika Reddy retired. He defeated Sophie Capone 6-3, 6-0 and Zhoul pulled out a 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (8) win over Natalie Chapa.
 
Notes: Wong needs just one win to become the eighth player in program history with 100 combined career wins. She is now tied for 12th in JHU history with 44 career singles wins and is seventh with 55 doubles wins.
