Four-Goal Second-Half Lifts Hopkins Last Gettysburg, 4-1

Blue Jays Score Three Goals in 13 Minutes to Fuel Road Victory

GETTYSBURG, PA – Visiting Johns Hopkins scored three goals in a span of just over 13 minutes midway through the second half and the Blue Jays went on to a 4-1 victory at Gettysburg in Centennial Conference Women's Soccer action at Clark Field Wednesday night.  The win is the fifth straight for 23rd-ranked Johns Hopkins, which improves to 9-3-1 overall and 4-1 in the Centennial with the victory.  The Bullets slip to 5-4-2 overall and 2-2 in the Centennial.

After a scoreless first half, the Blue Jays took control with the three-goal spurt that put the game away.  Freshman Carolina Chao helped get the Blue Jays going as she floated a ball into the box that a Bullet defender tried to head away, but it bounced right to junior Caroline Marcus, who lifted a shot over the head of Gettysburg goalie Alex Jurow from in tight to stake the Jays to the one-goal lead.

That one-goal lead held for nine minutes before the Blue Jays would add the first of two goals in less than four minutes.  Kei Kitamura played a ball through the box that sophomore Carolyn Johnson was able to chase down and quickly send through the box just above the goal line and classmate Kendall Frederick was there to punch it into an open net to double the Blue Jay lead.

The lead was three less than four minutes later when Frederick came up with possession along the endline and lofted a cross to the back post that senior Maria Romo-Nichols was able to get a foot on and bounce inside the near post.

The Bullets would trim the deficit to 3-1 just over three minutes later as they converted on a corner.  Karissa Hufnagle was able to get a head on the corner and send it towards the goal, where Blue Jay goalie Ella Krutchev was able to jump and get a hand on it.  Kruntchev's punch at the ball sent it off the crossbar and right to Kylee Gust, who headed it just under the crossbar to get the Bullets on the board.

Senior Natalie Smith would close the scoring for the Blue Jays in the 86th minute as she headed home her second goal of the game off a perfect cross from sophomore Irene Sanchez Burgeuno.

Johns Hopkins held a 20-6 advantage in shots and took six of the seven corners in the game.  The four goals in the second half were the most for the Blue Jays in a half since they scored four times in the second half of a 5-0 win at TCNJ in the second round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

With four different players finding the net tonight, the Blue Jays' 11 goals over the last three games have been scored by nine different players.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, October 8 when the Blue Jays welcome Washington College to Homewood Field for a Centennial Conference game against the Shorewomen (5 pm).  The Blue Jays will honor their seniors and graduate students prior the start of Saturday's game.
