George Washington Tops Johns Hopkins, 19-16

BALTIMORE, MD – Visting George Washington used a 6-2 run in the third quarter to take control of the game en route to a 19-16 win over Johns Hopkins Thursday night in non-conference action. The Blue Jays slip to 11-4 on the season while the 20th-ranked Revolutionaries win their sixth straight to improve to 10-8.

Hopkins grabbed an early 3-1 lead with goals from Mason Hofmann and Max Blecher. Antonio Florena scored with 4:07 to play in the first to spark a 4-0 run as the Revs took a 5-3 lead. Adonis Vlassis capped the early run with a five-meter goal just 23 seconds into the second.

Owen Bartlett halted the run and brought JHU back within one at 5:24. GW answered with goals from Vlassis and Florena and the Revs' led 7-4 just two minutes later. Hofmann got one back for the Blue Jays as they went into the half trailing 7-5.

Vlassis scored 31 seconds into the third quarter to ignite that 6-2 run that saw George Washington's lead swell to 13-7. The teams traded goals over the final two minutes of the quarter and the Revs took a 15-9 lead into the fourth. GW used a 3-1 run early in the fourth to push its lead to 18-10 with 5:22 to play. Brody Mars then scored a six-on-five goal to spark a 6-1 game-ending run. Gavin Brooke scored with 18 ticks on the clock to make it a three-goal game, but that's as close as the Jays could get.

Hofmann led Hopkins with a career-best six goals and tied his high with seven points. Bartlett notched a hat trick and an assist and drew three exclusions. Blecher scored twice to go with two steals and one block. Luke Mendelsohn and Ben Lucas handed out three assists each. Kyle Pearson finished with eight saves, including the 800th of his career, and one assist.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, October 18 as the Blue Jays open Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. JHU will take on Conn College and host Penn State Behrend.
