BALTIMORE, MD – In the first ever meet in the newly renovated Barbara & Jerry Procton Pool, Johns Hopkins won 12 of 14 events en route to a 197-56 victory over Mount St. Mary's Saturday afternoon, improving to 5-0 to start the season.
Hopkins kicked off the meet with a win in the 200 Medley Relay.
Jaya Veerapaneni,
Reese Rosenthal,
Kennedy Lee and
Elizabeth Cohen combined for a swim of 1:46.92 to win by six tenths of a second.
Alex Watson then grabbed a win in the 1000 Free, edging out teammate
Julia Tuinman by over 10 seconds. Watson clocked a 10:56.97 and Tuinman touched in 11:07.34.
Carly White rounded out the top three with a swim of 11:07.73. The Blue Jays then claimed the top three spots in the 200 Free, led by Lee who touched in 1:54.39, followed by
Melissa Er (1:56) and
Claire Han (1:56.87) to finish second and third, respectively.
Veerapaneni added an individual win as she took the top spot in the 100 Back in 57.17.
Stella Zhang (58.70) and
Lily Rossmann (59.20) rounded out the top three. Hopkins turned in another one-two-three finish, this time in the 200 Fly.
Maddie Horner paced the field with her swim of 2:09.65, followed by
Rachel Davis (2:12.55) and
Kate Petitt (2:12.83)
Cohen narrowly edged out teammate
Kimberly Lan in the 50 Free to claim the individual win in 24.61. Lan finished three hundredths of a second after to claim second (24.64). JHU again went one-two in the 100 Free. Han paced the field with a swim of 53.90, followed by Er (53.95).
Lee grabbed her second individual win as she led the Blue Jays to a one-two-three finish in the 200 Back. Lee touched the wall in 2:02.84 to claim first, followed by Veerapaneni (2:09.52) and Lan (2:10.81). In the 200 Breast, the Blue Jays went one-two as Davis paced the field with a swim of 2:27.69.
Katherine Chelus followed shortly behind with a second-place finish (2:31.91).
Watson added her second individual win in the 500 Free as she took the top spot in 5:13.91. White claimed second in the event, finishing just under 15 seconds behind Watson (5:28.60). For the sixth time, Hopkins swept the top three spots in an event. Petitt led the Blue Jays in the 100 Fly with a swim of 59.01. Cohen took second (59.15) and Rossmann finished in third (59.99).
Hopkins capped the afternoon with a first and second-place finish in the 200 Free Relay. Veerapaneni, Lan,
Renee Bak and Cohen earned the win in 1:36.44. The team of Han, Er, Watson and
Anna Miler placed second with a time of 1:38.70.
After the meet, head coach
Scott Armstrong reflected on the milestone event, saying, "A special thank you to Mount St. Mary's for coming to the first ever competition in our newly renovated Barbara and Jerry Procton pool! One thing that is very clear is that this pool is FAST!"
The Blue Jays return to action on Saturday, November 8 against Georgetown.
