NEWVILLE, PA – Johns Hopkins junior
Kenny Wanlass had been on this stage before. Just a year ago, he placed eighth at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships to help the Blue Jays to a runner-up finish in the team standings while grabbing All-Region honors for himself.
On Saturday, Wanlass took those performances up a notch as he became the fourth Blue Jay in program history to win the individual regional title and his first-place showing powered the Blue Jays to the third team title in school history (2013, 2016, 2025).
While Wanlass led the way with his first-place showing, it was the Blue Jays' depth that powered them to the team title. Wanlass was followed by a pair of Carnegie Mellon runners in second and third place, but it was all Hopkins Blue in the eight seconds after the Tartan duo crossed as six consecutive Blue Jays would grab spots four through nine to fuel the run to the team title.
With the seven runners among the top nine finishers, Johns Hopkins eased to the team title with 23 points, while Carnegie Mellon finished second with 64 points. Lebanon Valley (121), Dickinson (154) and Messiah (172) rounded out the top five in the final teams standings. The 23 points mark the best regional score in program history.
A group of seven reached the final split at the 5.9-kilometer split in a virtual deadlock at 19:22, but Wanlass would create separation late and finished with a winning time of 25:16.80 to edge Carnegie Mellon's
Ryan Podnar, who was second at 25:20.47.
After
Nicolo Fasanelli grabbed bronze (25:22.47), it was
Brady Ott leading the run of six straight Blue Jays to cross as he finished in (25:22.93). From there, it was
Cedar Nichols-Barnhart (25:25.66),
Connor Oiler (25:25.82),
Rowan Cassidy (25:25.85),
Nash Minor (25:28.22) and
Caleb Tenney (25:30.37) ensuring the Blue Jays left with the team title and the accompanying automatic bid to next week's NCAA Championships.
Nichols-Barnhart and Tenney were the only two freshmen to place in the top 40 and all seven Blue Jay entries earn All-Region honors with their finishes today.
Wanlass joins
John Robinson (1991),
Gavin McElhennon (2022) and
Emmanuel Leblond (2024) as Johns Hopkins' NCAA Regional individual champions.
