BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins women's swimming team accumulated 404 points and sits in fourth place after the first day at Loyola University Maryland's H2ounds Invitational on Friday. Host Loyola grabbed 922 first-day points to sit in first place after day one. Johns Hopkins is the only non-Division I program among the five competing teams.
The Blue Jays grabbed a fifth-place finish in the 200-medley relay to open the day as the team of
Jaya Veerapaneni, Reed Rosenthal, Kennedy Lee and Anna Miller touched home in 1:44.47. The Blue Jays' B and C entries also finished in the top 11 among the 16 entries.
Johns Hopkins added three strong finishes in the 500 free with one A finalist and two top finishes in the B final. Junior
Julia Tuinman qualified for the A final and placed ninth with a time of 5:11.00, while senior
Alex Watson won the B final (5:07.38) and sophomore
Melissa Er was third (5:07.58).
The Blue Jays produced another A finalist in the 200 IM with senior
Rachel Davis earning a spot in the nine-person final; she touched in 2:09.11 to place eighth.
In the 50 free, the Blue Jays got a 10
th-place overall finish – and first place in the B final – from junior
Kimberly Lan (23:79) with classmate
Elizabeth Cohen touching home in 24:15 to place 13
th overall and fourth in the B final.
Rounding out the top performances on day one for the Blue Jays was the 800 free relay team of Er, Tuinman,
Claire Han and Watson, which closed with a fourth-place showing in a time of 7:41.73.
The second day of the H2ounds Invitational will begin on Saturday morning at 10 am with the prelims with the finals starting at 6 pm.
