ST. DAVIDS, PA – The Johns Hopkins men's basketball team outscored host Eastern 8-2 in the final 40 seconds of the game as the Blue Jays slipped past the host Eagles, 77-69, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Blue Jays' record to 3-1, while the Eagles slip to 2-4.
Â
In a game that featured 10 ties and eight lead changes, Johns Hopkins led just 69-67 after Eastern's
Anthony Williams got into the lane for a layup with 71 seconds remaining.
Â
On the Blue Jays' ensuing possession, it was senior
Charlie Jackson beating the shot clock with a driving scoop along the baseline to push the Blue Jay lead back to four (71-67). From there, the Blue Jays would salt the game away at the line as
Nick Klaiber, Jackson and
Jeb Williams were all true on a pair of attempts and the Eagles managed just a layup down the stretch.
Â
Johns Hopkins led for a majority of the first half and had the lead as high as six early on (16-10) after a
Justin Huang triple with 11:58 on the clock. The Eagles would pull even at 16 and there would be six ties down the stretch in the first half – the last of which came at 29-all with 3:26 on the first-half clock – but Hopkins would carry a 36-32 lead into the break after a
Logan Fuller three-pointer with six seconds remaining in the opening half.
Â
The Blue Jays would match their largest lead of the game early in the second half when Jackson got free in the paint to make it 40-34, but a 10-4 Eagle run, which was capped by a
Mason Lewis triple with 15:40 to play, pulled Eastern even at 44.
Â
Neither team would lead by more than three over the next seven minutes and the Blue Jays held several four-point leads through the 60s before the Williams layup with 71 ticks remaining made it a one possession game.
Â
From there, it was Jackson's late-clock layup and the work at the line that would lock up the victory for the Blue Jays.
Jackson (22 pts., 6 rebs.) and
Wyatt Eglinton Manner (21 pts., 6 rebs.) led the way for the Blue Jays, who also got 16 points from Klaiber. The Blue Jays were plus-seven on the boards (36-29) and were 21-of-24 (.875) from the line.
Â
DaRon Sherman and
Olise Onyeka both scored 15 points for Eastern with Onyeka adding a game-high 10 rebounds and three blocks.
Â
The Blue Jays will return to action on Saturday, November 29 when they welcome Salisbury to Goldfarb Gymnasium.
