Hopkins Rolls to Seventh Straight Win, 62-38 at Haverford

Blue Jays Never Trail in Topping Fords

HAVERFORD, PA – The #20 (WBCA)/#22 (D3hoops.com) Johns Hopkins women's basketball team outscored host Haverford 40-20 in the second and third quarters combined as the Blue Jays rolled to a 62-38 Centennial Conference victory Saturday afternoon. The win bumps the Blue Jays' record to 16-3 overall and 8-1 in the Centennial, while the Fords slip to 8-11 overall and 2-7 in the Centennial.

The Blue Jays led by 15 at the half and put the game away in the third quarter by outscoring the Fords 22-14 in the period.  The teams played evenly for just over five minutes and the Fords were within 38-24 before a Macie Feldman layup ignited a 10-0 run for the Blue Jays that she would cap with a pair of free throws that extended the lead to 48-24 with 2:35 on the third-quarter clock.   From there, the lead would never dip below 20 in the final 12 minutes of the game as the Jays extended their winning streak to seven games.

In a game they never trailed, the Blue Jays sprinted out to an 8-0 lead that they pushed to 14-4 in the first seven minutes and led 16-11 at the end of the first quarter.  Four points each from Michaela O'Neil, Kendall Dunham and Emily Collins, fueled the early spurt for Johns Hopkins, which saw the Fords close to the five-point deficit with a 7-2 spurt of their own to end the period.

The Blue Jays stretched the five-point lead at the end of one quarter to 15 at the half as they outscored the Fords 16-5 in the period to grab a 32-17 halftime lead.  The Fords were down just 18-15 with 7:25 on the second-quarter clock, but a Layla Henderson layup just under 90 seconds later sprung the Blue Jays on a 14-2 half-ending run.  Six different players scored during the spurt for the Blue Jays, with Beth Corelli and O'Neil knocking down three-pointers to help fuel the run.  On the defensive end, Johns Hopkins allowed just one field goal and forced four Haverford turnovers in the final seven minutes.

O'Neil was the only Blue Jay player to reach double figures as she led the way with 13 points, while Collins, Dunham and Greta Miller all added eight points in a balanced offensive effort.  The Blue Jay bench contributed 25 points in the victory and Hopkins got 36 points in the paint on the day.

Audrey Jakway paced the Fords with 12 points and nine rebounds and Abby Ryan added eight points, but the Fords were just 16-of-60 (.278) from the floor and could never make a dent in the Blue Jay lead over the final 20 minutes.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Wednesday, February 5 when the Blue Jays welcome #10/#9 Gettysburg to Goldfarb Gym.
