Ashley Mackin finished with her second straight five-goal game and scored the game-winner with 3:43 left in overtime to lift 10
th-ranked Johns Hopkins to a 12-11 win over 25
th-ranked Duke. The Blue Jays improve to 1-1 on the season while handing the Blue Devils their first loss of the season.
Duke scored the final two goals of regulation to tie the game, rallying from a 10-5 deficit, to force overtime.
Annie Marshall converted an eight-meter shot at 8:26 to put Hopkins up 11-9, but back-to-back Carly Bernstein goals in the final 4:10 knotted the score at 11. The Blue Devils won the draw to open overtime, but the Jays forced a turnover and cleared. After working the ball around,
Lacey Downey found Mackin at the 12-meter arc, she dodged toward the cage, dropped her stick and beat Kennedy Everson low.
It didn't look like overtime would be necessary early as Hopkins raced out to a 7-1 lead in the opening quarter. Mackin opened the scoring when she took a pass from Downey, turned on the doorstep and scored from in-tight just 90 seconds in.
Megan Kielbasa the scored a free position goal at 12:11, followed by a left-handed score in traffic from
Ava Angello less than two minutes later.
Campbell Case scored in the right alley off a Mackin helper and then Mackin capped the opening run with her second of the day at 6:01.
Bella Goodwin got Duke on the board at 4:20 with a free position goal, but Hopkins answered with a pair of Mackin scores to take a 7-1 lead into the second. The Blue Devils turned the tables in the second, scoring three unanswered to cut the Blue Jays' lead to 7-4 at the half. Duke picked up where it left off, getting a Eva Pronti goal just 31 seconds in to make it a 7-5 game.
Angello halted the run with back-to-back goals, followed by a Downey power-play goal where she picked the back post to stake Hopkins to a 10-5 lead with 6:52 to play in the third. Ava Biancardi responded with an unassisted tally at 2:34 to spark a 4-0 Duke run. Bernstein then scored to close the third and open the fourth and the lead was 10-8. Goodwin punctuated the run with her third of the afternoon to make it just a one-goal game with 11:43 to play. Marshall pushed the lead back to two with her free position goal, but those two Bernstein goals would force the overtime.
Mackin led the Blue Jays with five goals and tied her career high with seven points. Angello finished with four points and her first hat trick of the season. Downey notched a career-high three assists and four points.
Taylor Hoss also finished with a multi-point day with two assists.
Reagan O'Brien had a game-high five caused turnovers to go with two ground balls and a draw control.
Bernstein led Duke with five goals and eight points, while Goodwin added a hat trick. Biancardi (1g, 2a), Pronti (1g, 1a) and Mattie Shearer (1g, 1a) also had multi-point games. Sydney Smith and Amanda Paci led the defense with three ground balls and three caused turnovers each.
Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, February 18 as the Blue Jays visit the 14
th-ranked Loyola Greyhounds for the Battle of Charles Street. Opening draw at Ridley Athletic Complex is slated for 6:00 pm.
