Late Push Lifts Loyola Past Johns Hopkins, 11-7

Angello Nets Three, Including 100th of Career

BALTIMORE, MD – The #13/#16 Loyola Maryland women's lacrosse team built an early four-goal lead, then scored the final four goals of the game to stall a rally by visiting #10/#9 Johns Hopkins as the Greyhounds grabbed an 11-7 victory at the Ridley Athletic Complex Tuesday night.  The win is the second straight for Loyola, which improves to 2-1 on the year with the victory.  The Blue Jays slip to 1-2.

After Johns Hopkins had trimmed an early 6-2 deficit to 8-7 on Ava Angello's third goal of the game early in the fourth quarter, the Greyhounds pushed out to a two-goal lead at 9-7 when Georgia Latch bounced one home with 11:04 remaining. The two-goal lead held for more than seven minutes before the 'Hounds took advantage of a player advantage situation to extend the lead to 10-7 on an Elisa Faklaris goal off a feed from Hatch and Chase Boyle closed the game with her fourth of the night with just over two minutes remaining.

The Blue Jays found themselves in a two-goal hole midway through the first quarter after the Greyhounds struck for back-to-back goals in a span of just under four minutes.  Emma Talago opened the scoring with an unassisted strike with 9:57 remaining in the opening period and Talago then zipped a feed to the crease that Ava Kane stuffed home at the 6:01 mark to give Loyola the early lead.

The Blue Jays needed less than a minute to pull even late in the period as Annie Marshall picked up a loose ball in the circle and fired one home from in tight and Lacey Downey stuck one under the crossbar just 55 seconds later to make it a 2-2 game.

The Greyhounds grabbed control with a 4-0 run that bridged the first and second quarters to go up 6-2.  Kane scored twice during the spree and Boyle ended the run with a 12-yard blast from the top while the 'Hounds were up a player with 9:05 on the second-quarter clock.

Angello matched Boyle with a laser from the top of the circle 47 seconds later and added an assist on Downey's second of the night just over five minutes later when she fed her on the wing and then set a perfect screen that Downey shot through to the far post to pull the Jays within two at the break (6-4).

Johns Hopkins managed to kill off a two-player disadvantage early in the third quarter, only to have Boyle get free in the slot with 11:17 remaining in the period and the 'Hounds maintained the three-goal lead for more than six minutes – due in large part to a big one-on-one save from Blue Jay goalie Morgan Giardina just over a minute after Boyle's goal – before the Blue Jays used Angello's highlight reel 100th career goal to make it 7-5.

Boyle and Charlotte Smith traded goals in the final four minutes of the third quarter to make it 8-6 entering the fourth quarter before Angello made it a one-goal game just 49 seconds in; Latch followed with her first of the game three minutes later to ignite the game-ending spurt for the 'Hounds.

Angello paced the Blue Jays with three goals and one assist and Downey chipped in with two goals and one assist.  Giardina posted seven saves in goal, but the Blue Jays were never able to pull even after Loyola built the early four-goal cushion.

Boyle (4g) and Latch (1g, 5a) combined for five goals and five assists and Boyle added 11 draw controls as the Greyounds won the draw battle 17-5.
