BALTIMORE, MD – Visiting Florida scored the final three goals of the game to beat Johns Hopkins, 12-11, in both teams' season opener Friday at Homewood Field.
Ashley Mackin scored her fifth goal of the game on a quick-stick off a
Taylor Hoss pass to put Hopkins up 11-9 with 5:59 to play. Florida answered two and a half minutes later with a power-play goal from Jordan Basso to cut the deficit in half. The Gators then won the draw and Clark Hamilton scored on a left-handed shot off the dodge to knot the score with 2:42 on the clock.
Hopkins got the ensuing draw, the 12
th of the game for
Laurel Gonzalez, but a turnover with 70 seconds to play gave the ball to Florida. The Gators cleared and worked the ball around to Gianna Monaco, who drew an eight-meter. She converted on the shot with 17.7 seconds to play to put Florida on top. The Blue Jays once again came up with the draw but couldn't get the equalizer.
Florida grabbed an early 3-1 lead, thanks to a pair of Kaitlyn Davies goals, in the opening eight minutes.
Ava Angello opened the second quarter when she spun on her defender, stepped down and ripped a low shot from seven yards out to make it a 3-2 game. Jenna Markey scored less than two minutes later to push the Gators' lead back to two.
Megan Kielbasa took a feed from
Annie Marshall and scored just 19 seconds later to spark a four-goal Blue Jay run. The run spanned took less than five minutes and saw goals from Mackin, Angello and
Lacey Downey as JHU went up 6-4 at the 7:58-mark. The Gators pulled even with goals from Davies and Markey to make it 6-6 at the half.
Downey scored to open the third when she grabbed a ricochet off the post and picked the far post just 29 seconds in. Once again, Florida responded, getting goals from Gabbi Koury and Frannie Hahn to take an 8-7 lead with 12:31 to play in the third. That turned out to be all the scoring for the quarter.
Mackin ended a 16-minute scoring drought for the Blue Jays with a short-handed free position goal at 13:25. Marshall then put the Jays on top with a free position goal just 47 seconds later. Mackin pushed the lead to two when she scored on the doorstep, off a Downey helper, to make it a 10-8 game with 8:08 to play. Basso pulled the Gators back within one on the ensuing possession, but Mackin's fifth goal of the game came just 59 seconds after that and gave JHU back the two-goal cushion.
Mackin's fourth goal of the game gave her 100 points for her career, making her the 49
th player in school history to reach the mark. It was her third game with at least five goals in her career. Downey (2g, 1a), Angello (2g) and Marshall (1g, 1a) also had multi-point games. Downey also had three ground balls, two draws and two caused turnovers. Gonzalez's 12 draws broke the program record for draws by a freshman.
Reagan O'Brien led the defense with three caused turnovers and is now tied for 12
th in program history with 63.
Davies led the Gators with three goals, while Basso (2g, 1a) and Hahn (1g, 2a) had three points apiece. Koury, Monaco and Ava Tighe each had two points (1g, 1a). Theresa Bragg had three takeaways and three ground balls for the defense, which also got 10 saves from Georgia Hoey.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, February 15 versus Duke. Opening draw at Homewood Field is slated for 1:00 pm.
