Lescault Overtime Winner Lifts Johns Hopkins Over #8 Syracuse

SYRACUSE, NY – For the second time in as many games, Johns Hopkins rallied to win 14-13 on the road in New York. MK Lescault scored 70 seconds into overtime to lift Hopkins at eighth-ranked Syracuse Monday afternoon. The Blue Jays win their fourth straight as they improve to 5-2 on the season, while the Orange fall to 4-4.

The Blue Jays trailed 11-9 less than two minutes into the fourth quarter but got a pair of goals from Ashley Mackin in a 90-second span to tie the game with 7:19 to play. Sam DeVito put the Orange back on top two minutes later when she scored with just two seconds on the possession clock. Megan Kielbasa answered for Hopkins just 35 seconds later, scoring from in-tight to tie the game at 12. Charlotte Smith then put Hopkins on top with a lefty shot from the middle of the arc with 2:23 to play.

Syracuse battled back and tied the game with 12 seconds on the clock on an Emma Muchnick free position goal. Hopkins won the draw to open overtime, and it was Lescault who took matters into her own hand. She dodged the left alley and picked the back post from a tough angle to win it.

The Orange jumped out to a 3-0 lead with goals from Mileena Cotter, Caroline Trinkaus and Alexa Vogelman in the opening four minutes and six seconds. Samantha DiCarlo then got the Blue Jays on the board when she snuck an eight-meter shot inside the near post at 8:55 in the first. Vogelman netted her second of the afternoon just 15 seconds after DiCarlo's score to spark a 3-0 Syracuse run that included goals from Muchnick and Trinkaus.

Hopkins got back on the board after a great ground ball by Megan Kielbasa led to a Lescault solo clear. Lescault then found Ashley Mackin in the slot, and she split a double team to score on the doorstep at 3:17. That goal ignited a 5-1 Hopkins' run that saw the Blue Jays pull within one. Ava Angello fueled the run with three straight free position goals, in a span of just 3:13. After an Annie Parker goal at 8:02, the Blue Jays won the draw and Lescault hit Mackin in stride in the left alley for the score just 18 seconds later.

Syracuse scored back-to-back goals to close the second and open the third to push its lead to 9-6. But a pair of Angello goals, including a behind-the-back beauty, sliced the deficit back to one with 5:13 to play in the third. Cotter and Trinkaus then sandwiched scores around another Angello goal and the Orange led 11-9 just 1:54 into the fourth.

Angello led all scorers with a career-high-tying six goals, on just nine shots. Mackin added four goals while Lescault (1g, 2a) and Taylor Hoss (3a) had three points each. Laurel Gonzalez finished with a game-high nine draw controls. Reagan O'Brien and Hannah Johnson had three caused turnovers each and Morgan Giardina finished with nine saves.

Emma Ward led the Orange with three assists and four points and Trinkaus added a hat trick. Josely Caramelli tallied seven draw controls and Coco Vandiver had three caused turnovers. Danielle Guyette finished with seven saves in the cage.

Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, March 16 as the Blue Jays visit the 21st-ranked USC Trojans. Opening draw for both teams' Big Ten opener is slated for 1:00 pm at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Notes: Gonzalez now has 66 draws on the season, tied for seventh most all-time in a single season in JHU history • Angello now has 150 career points • Mackin moved into a tie for 20th in school history with 135 career points • Hopkins' three overtime wins this season are the most in a single season in program history.
