Hoss and Mackin Fuel Johns Hopkins' 17-11 Win at USC

LOS ANGELES, CA – Johns Hopkins got a combined 15 points from Ashley Mackin and Taylor Hoss to fuel a 17-11 win at 21st-ranked USC Sunday afternoon in the LA Coliseum. The Blue Jays win their fifth straight to improve to 6-2 while the Trojans see their seven-game win streak snapped and fall to 7-2.

USC opened the scoring when Christina Gagnon scored from a tough angle at 12:02. Hopkins answered with a behind-the-back goal from Mackin just 68 seconds later to spark a six-goal run. Ava Angello and Mackin combined to score all six goals as the Blue Jays pushed out to a 6-1 lead with 2:45 to play in the first.

Isabelle Vitale scored off a feed from Emma Bunting to halt the run with 54 seconds left int eh first. Lacey Downey opened the second with back-to-back goals, just two minutes apart, to stake Hopkins to an 8-2 lead. Maddie Dora got one back for USC when she took a pass from Reese Robinson in the slot, turned and fired at 8:54.

The Blue Jays then scored twice in 16 seconds with goals from Angello and Hoss to push the lead to 10-3. Angello took a pass from MK Lescault, dipped under her defender, tip-toed the crease and scored at 7:47. Hoss then dodged from goal line extended and scored on the doorstep.

The Trojans got back-to-back goals from Kaylee Fravert to ignite a 4-1 run that bridged halftime and cut the Blue Jays' lead to 11-7. Downey had the lone JHU goal during the spurt, scoring off a feed from Mackin to make it 11-5 at the half. Dora then opened the third with two goals in 62 seconds and the Jays' lead was down to four.

Hoss and Campbell Case sandwiched goals around a Dora fast-break goal and Hopkins led 13-8 with 7:40 to play in the third. Hannah Barron scored with the shot clock winding down at 6:06 and that would do it for the third-quarter scoring.

Fravert opened the fourth with a quick shot off a Bunting feed and the lead was down to three. That's as close as USC would get as Hopkins closed the game on a 4-1 run, with Mackin and Hoss combing for the four goals.

Mackin led all scorers with eight points and six goals. Hoss finished with career-bests of four goals and seven points. Downey added a career high five points on three goals and two assists and Angello added a hat trick. Laurel Gonzalez had a game-high nine draw controls and Morgan Giardina finished with nine saves. Paris Colgain had three caused turnovers and three ground balls.

Dora paced USC with four goals while Vitale totaled four assists and five points. Bunting also finished with four points (1g, 3a) and Fravert added a hat trick.

Hopkins to action on Sunday, March 23 as the Blue Jays host the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Opening draw at Homewood Field is slated for 11:00 am.

Notes: Mackin's fourth goal of the game was the 100th of her career • She is the 17th player in school Division I history to reach the century mark in goals • Gonzalez now has 75 draw controls, sixth most in school single-season history.
