WINTER HAVEN, FL – The No. 3-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team faced fifth-ranked Endicott (7-1) in its third game of their spring break, Saturday morning, falling to the Gulls 4-3. The Blue Jays suffered its first loss of the season, losing a back-and-forth thriller, allowing more than three runs in a game for the first time this year.
Hopkins (11-1) found themselves in an early deficit after a third inning, lead-off home run by AJ Hamm. However, Endicott couldn't cage the Blue Jay offense for long, as
Jimmy Stevens led off the seventh inning with his third home run of the season, evening the score up at one. With two outs,
Dylan Whitney doubled down the third-base line followed by an
Alex Shane walk. A blunder from the Gulls second baseman allowed both runners to score on a
Shawn Steuerer dropped fly ball, giving the Jays a 3-1 lead.
Endicott battled back, hitting two more solo shots in the bottom half of the seventh, tying the score up at three. The Gulls then added the go-ahead run in the eighth inning on a bases loaded throwing error by
Dillon Souvignier, taking the 4-3 lead headed into the ninth, where they ultimately secured the victory.
Outside of two solo home runs off
Quinn Rovner, the graduate student was dealing, tossing six innings, surrendering five hits and two runs, and retired 10 straight up until the second home run.
Ryan Anderson is credited with the loss.
The Blue Jays are back in action Monday, March 17 with a double-header at the RussMatt Invitational in Florida, taking on Rutgers-Camden in the morning game with first pitch scheduled for 10 AM, and TCNJ in the afternoon game slated for 2 PM.
