Cyr’s Go-Ahead Home Run Lifts Blue Jays to 4-3 Win Over McDaniel

BALTIMORE, MD – The No. 3-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team faced McDaniel (14-16-1, 5-5) Monday afternoon, defeating the Green Terror 4-3. Caleb Cyr hit the go-ahead home run in the bottom of the eighth to give Hopkins its 10th consecutive win.

Dillon Souvignier put the Blue Jays (28-3, 9-1) on the board early, blasting a two-run home run in the second inning that landed on University Parkway. Caleb Cyr added to the lead in the third with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Alex Shane and extending the advantage to 3-0.

Connor Henk was dominant through the first three innings but encountered trouble in the fourth. After walking the first two batters, he allowed a runner to reach third on a wild pitch. McDaniel capitalized on an error by Shawn Steuerer to score their first run and Thomas Mezzullo followed with an RBI single to pull the Green Terror within one, 3-2.

The game was tied in the top of the eighth when McDaniel's Ben Davis launched a solo home run off Tyler Sugrim. The Green Terror then loaded the bases with two outs, but reliever Thomas Cancian ended the threat, striking out the final batter.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Caleb Cyr answered back for Hopkins, delivering a no-doubt home run to reclaim the lead, 4-3.

Cancian retired the first two batters in the ninth before handing the ball over to Grant Meert. The southpaw allowed a single but then induced a game-ending ground out to third, securing his third save of the season. Cancian earned the win, improving to 1-1, after throwing 1.1 innings, striking out two, and hitting one batter.

The Blue Jays are back in action Tuesday, April 15 at Babb Field, taking on Dickinson in the first game of the home-and-home series with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 PM.
