BALTIMORE, MD – Third-ranked Northwestern used a 9-1 run to end the game and secure an 18-5 win over host and fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins Thursday night. The Blue Jays see their eight-game win streak snapped as they fall to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten. The Wildcats improve to 10-2 on the season and 4-0 in the B1G.
Leading 6-3, Northwestern got a goal from an Abby LoCascio goal just 53 seconds into the second to spark a 3-0 run. Taylor Lapointe and Lucy Munro followed with goals and the Wildcats led 9-3 with 8:22 to go in the second.
Charlotte Smith cashed in on an eight-meter shot at 6:58 to halt the NU run.
Emerson Bohlig answered with a score off a helper from Madison Taylor just 47 seconds later to spark a 5-0 Northwestern run. Four different 'Cats scored during the run capped by a pair of Taylor goals and NU led 14-4 with 1:34 to go in the half.
Ava Angello had the final say of the half when she took a pass from
Lacey Downey, avoided a triple team and fired home her second with 5.7 seconds on the clock. The Wildcats took control in the second half, outscoring the Blue Jays 4-0 to take the win.
Hopkins struck first when
Campbell Case found a cutting
Ashley Mackin, and she scored on the doorstep at 11:48. Taylor responded with back-to-back goals just 53 seconds apart to ignite a 6-0 NU run as the 'Cats pushed out to a 6-1 lead with 6:52 left in the first. Case got open in the slot and buried a pass from Smith with 1:30 to play. Angello cut the deficit to three with 14 ticks on the clock when she took a pass from Downey, dipped under her defender and bounced home her first of the night.
Angello led the Blue Jays with two goals to extend her goal-scoring streak to 31 games. Smith also had a multi-point night with one goal and one assist.
Reagan O'Brien tied the single-game record with seven caused turnovers and had a pair of ground balls. Downey had three caused turnovers, two draws and two ground balls to go with her one assist.
Morgan Giardina finished with eight saves in the cage, including several point-blank stops.
Taylor led the Wildcats with eight points (4g, 4a) while Niki Miles had a five-point (2g, 3a) night. Munro and Lapointe each had a hat trick, while Bohlig added three points (2g, 1a). Sam Smith had a game-high 12 draw controls and goalies Delaney Sweitzer (6), Francesca Argentieri (5) and Cara Nugent (1) combined for 12 saves in the cage.
Hopkins returns to action on Thursday, April 10 at Ohi State. Opening draw is slated for 6:00 pm at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium.
