Hopkins Upsets Seventh-Ranked Middlebury to Advance to NCAA Quarterfinals

BALTIMORE, MD – Host and 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins upset seventh-ranked Middlebury, 4-2, on Sunday to grab a ticket to the NCAA Quarterfinals. The Blue Jays improve to 16-7 and advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2021. The Panthers finish their season at 16-7.

Hopkins earns just its second win over Middlebury, snapping a four-match losing streak in the series. Five of the six all-time meetings have come in the NCAA Sweet 16. This is Hopkins' sixth NCAA Quarterfinals appearance all-time, with all six trips coming since 2012.

Marco Azar and Mukundh Boopathi earned a quick 6-2 win at number three doubles over Noah Lewis and Neel Epstein. The Panthers answered when Hugh Hentschel and Nikky Kondamuri won 6-3 over Allen Gong and Chakor Rajendra at two. All eyes turned to court one to determine the doubles point in a match-up of a pair of top-10 doubles teams. Thehan Wijemanne and Noah Laber pulled out marathon 7-6 (7) win over Daniel Ardila and Dylan Blenkiron to grab the point for Middlebury.

Azar was the first one off the court at number six singles as he tied the match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Hentschel. Blenkiron followed with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 win at three over Epstein to put the Blue Jays on top 2-1. Hopkins would not trail again.

Zahari Stoimenov gutted out a 7-5, 7-6 (2) win on five over Lewis to give Hopkins a 3-1 lead. Julian Wu kept Middlebury in the match with a come-from-behind 2-6, 7-5, 6-0 win versus Ardila at two. Gong, as he had done just about 24 hours earlier, decided the match on court four. Wijemanne took the first set 6-4, but Gong turned the tables and won sets two and three, by the same 6-4 score, to send the Blue Jays to California.

Hopkins will take on second-ranked Denison in the quarterfinals at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on May 19. Denison beat Swarthmore, 4-2, earlier in the day to advance to the quarterfinals. This will be the second meeting between the Blue Jays and Big Red this season and third all-time.
