MIDDLEBURY, VT – The 14
th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team stunned third-ranked and host Middlebury, 4-2, to punch its ticket to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the third consecutive year and the seventh time in program history Sunday afternoon. All seven Blue Jay quarterfinal appearances have come since 2012.
Â
With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 15-7 while the Panthers had their 13-match winning streak snapped and end their season at 18-3. The third-ranked Panthers are the highest ranked team Johns Hopkins has beaten since March 2, 2013, when the Blue Jays beat third-ranked Chicago (6-3). The win is also the first-ever for Johns Hopkins against Middlebury as the Blue Jays had dropped all three previous meetings, all of which came in the NCAA Tournament.
Â
The Blue Jays grabbed the all-important doubles point with wins at second and third. The Blue Jays' number two team of
Kamila Wong and
Ava Li grabbed a 6-3 win over Claudia Miller and Elsie Van Wieren and the decisive win came in the third spot, where
Sydney Langer and
Sahana Madala grabbed a 7-5 win over Nathalie van der Reis and Lulu Wu.Â
Â
Langer and Madala, who had seen Middlebury grab the win at one after Wong and Li's win, were up 2-0, 3-1, 4-2 and 5-3 before Van Der Reis and Wu pulled even, but the Langer and Madala earned the final two points to grab the win and earn Hopkins the double point.
Â
The Panthers were even after a Sahana Raman straight-set win at one and the teams traded wins at four and three – Hopkins' Li taking Wu in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) and Middlebury's Miller grabbing a tight 7-5, 6-4 win over
Lia Melvin – to even things at 2-2 with matches still going on courts two, five and six.
Â
The Blue Jays edged ahead when Madala finished off van der Reis (6-2, 7-5) with a pair of three-setters going on that would decide the winner.
Â
Needing just one point to grab the victory, the Blue Jays got what they needed from Wong at six as she spotted Nina Farhat a 7-5 win in the first set, but rallied for decisive 6-2 win in the second and polished off the victory with a 6-4 win in the third. Wong found herself down 3-1 and 4-2, but held serve twice and broke Farhat twice down the stretch to grab the victory.
Â
One match – a thrilling three-setter at number two – was unfinished when the match was clinched. The Blue Jays'
Sahana Sanjeeve was up 6-5 in the third set on Van Wieren after they had traded 6-4 wins in the first two sets.
Â
Johns Hopkins will take on host Claremont Mudd-Scripps in the NCAA Quarterfinals on May 20 at Claremont, which is the predetermined site for the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals this year. Claremont knocked off Amherst, 4-2, earlier on Sunday to advance to the quarterfinals. This will be the third all-time meeting between the two teams with each team holding a win in the series.
