Mulberg Announces Johns Hopkins Baseball Coaching Staff

Faris, Buckley Named Blue Jay Assistant Baseball Coaches

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins head baseball coach Nate Mulberg has announced the addition of Robby Faris and Jack Buckley to the Blue Jay coaching staff as assistant coaches. Faris will also serve as the program's recruiting coordinator and hitting coach. Additionally, Andrew Furman, a longtime assistant under former head coach Bob Babb, will remain on staff and be promoted to the program's top assistant and pitching coach.

"It's an exciting time for Hopkins Baseball, and I'm proud to welcome Robby Faris and Jack Buckley to our staff," said Mulberg. "Both bring high-level experience, a passion for development and a strong understanding of what it takes to succeed both on and off the field. Retaining Andrew Furman was also a top priority, and his continued presence provides our student-athletes with invaluable continuity and championship-level experience."

Faris returns to his alma mater with a robust background as both a player and coach, including positions in multiple Major League Baseball organizations and collegiate programs. Most recently, he served as an assistant coach at Cornell University, an Ivy League program, where he played a key role in developing the offense. During his tenure, he helped Ryan Porter lead the Ivy League with a .647 slugging percentage.

"Coming back to Johns Hopkins is a full-circle moment for me," said Faris. "This program shaped me in countless ways, and I'm excited to help guide the next generation of Blue Jays while continuing the tradition of excellence."

In 2024, Faris worked with the Houston Astros as a development scout in the amateur scouting department, while also supporting professional and international scouting efforts. Prior to that, he spent time with the Chicago White Sox as part of their player development team, where he contributed to their Triple-A affiliate, the Charlotte Knights, by preparing advanced scouting reports, creating defensive shift cards and coaching first base.

Faris began his professional journey as a production assistant at ESPN.

A 2020 graduate of Johns Hopkins University, Faris was a four-year player under the legendary Babb, posting a career .366 batting average. He helped lead the Blue Jays to two Centennial Conference championships and a third-place finish at the 2019 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship.

He holds a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and Government from Johns Hopkins and a Master's in Sports Management from Columbia University.

Buckley brings over five years of coaching experience and a strong playing background at both the NCAA Division I and III levels. Most recently, he served as a Senior Pitching Instructor at TopGun Baseball, where he led the development of pitching prospects and instructed at Franklin & Marshall prospect camps.

"Joining a program with Hopkins' tradition and leadership is a tremendous honor," said Buckley. "I'm excited to help develop our players and contribute to a winning culture under Coach Mulberg."

Before transitioning to coaching, Buckley worked in sales and business development in Washington, D.C. As a student-athlete, he pitched four seasons at Franklin & Marshall, where he compiled a 13–7 career record in 30 appearances, including 26 starts. He earned 2019 ABCA All-Region and All-Centennial Conference honors before completing his playing career at the University of Richmond under Mulberg.

Buckley earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Franklin & Marshall and a Master's in Nonprofit Studies from the University of Richmond.

Furman enters his 14th season with the Blue Jays and will continue as an assistant coach, the lone returning member from Babb's staff. Furman has played an instrumental role in guiding Hopkins to four NCAA Division III Baseball Championship appearances since 2019, including a national runner-up finish in 2023.

"I couldn't be more excited to be a part of Coach Mulberg's vision for the future of Johns Hopkins baseball while serving as a throughline to the strong history of the program," said Furman. "I'm eager to continue working with our players to help develop them both on and off the field."

Under his leadership, the Blue Jays have produced multiple standouts, including two Centennial Conference Pitchers of the Year, two ABCA Regional Pitchers of the Year, a D3Baseball.com Regional Pitcher of the Year and four CSC/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Philosophy from Gettysburg College, a Master of Arts in Psychological and Brain Sciences from Johns Hopkins and a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Maryland, where he currently works as a Clinical Research Assistant.
