Hopkins jumped out to a 7-1 lead over the game's opening 10 minutes. Long scored twice during the run, which saw six Blue Jays score. Nathan Jones and Rylan Takahashi then sandwiched goals around a Mendelsohn strike and it was 8-3 Blue Jays with 2:35 to play in the half.
Mendelsohn and Long pushed the lead to seven with back-to-back goals. Jones answered for the Panthers and it was 10-4, but a Mihalopoulos six-on-five goal made it a seven-goal game with 47 seconds left in the half. Kosta Radoman had the final say of the period, scoring with just two ticks on the clock to make it an 11-5 game at the half.
Mendelsohn scored back-to-back goals, followed by an
Alec Baker man-up score and the Blue Jays led 14-5 midway through the third. Chapman answered with three straight goals to pull back within six with 1:28 on the clock. Hopkins came right back with a three-goal run of its own, that bridged the quarter break, as the Jays led 17-8.
Jones then sparked a 4-1 Panthers' run that saw them trim the deficit to six but with just 1:15 to play, that's as close as they would get.
Matthieu Giauque closed out the scoring in the final minute as the Blue Jays took the 19-12 win.
Long finished with a game-high five goals and seven points while Baker tallied six points (3g, 3a). Mendelsohn (4g) and Mihalopoulos (2g) also had multi-goal games.
