PROVIDENCE, RI – Johns Hopkins dropped a heartbreaker to second-ranked Pomona-Pitzer, 9-8, on Sunday morning in JHU's fourth game of the Bruno Invite. The Blue Jays slip to 10-2 on the season while the Sagehens improve to 4-6.
Mason Hofmann and
Luke Mendelsohn scored twice in a 76-second span to give Hopkins an early 2-0 lead. Kai Baker scored a six-on-five goal with 5:29 left in the first to kick-start a 3-0 PP run that spanned nearly seven minutes. Connor Sullivan capped the run at 6:22 in the second to give the Sagehens a 3-2 lead.
Owen Bartlett halted the run with back-to-back goals, followed by a
Jason Mihalopoulos extra man score and the Blue Jays led 5-3 at the half. Baker scored just 44 seconds into the third quarter to spark a 5-1 PP run as the Sagehens pushed out to an 8-6 lead with 2:40 to play in the fourth.
Matthieu Giauque scored a six-on-five goal with 1:29 on the clock to cut the deficit in half, but Pomona answered just 25 seconds later.
Andrew Lee needed only 12 seconds to once again pull Hopkins within one, at 9-8. The score would remain that way for the final 52 seconds as both defenses stood firm.
Bartlett led Hopkins with two goals while Mendelsohn had a team-best three points (1g, 2a).

Alec Baker tallied a team-high four steals while Blecher grabbed three.
Hopkins wraps up the Bruno Invite on Sunday at 3:30 pm against host and 18
th-ranked Brown.
