WESTMINSTER, MD – The 25
th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team scored three goals in a 25-minute span midway through the first half and the Blue Jays went on to knock off home-standing McDaniel, 4-0, in a key early-season Centennial Conference game Wednesday afternoon. The win improves the Blue Jays' record to 5-3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial, while the Green Terror had a two-game winning streak snapped and slip to 4-3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial.
Â
Playing in rainy conditions throughout the game, the Blue Jays took control early, firing off five shots in the opening 13 minutes before breaking through in the 14
th minute off a corner kick. Graduate student
Kei Kitamura sent her corner offering into the middle of the box, where senior defender
Ella Macko headed home her second goal of the year to give the Blue Jays the early one-goal lead.
Â
The Green Terror wouldn't collect their first shot of the game until the 22
nd minute with Blue Jay freshman goalie
Ella Kruntchev able to easily control
Chloe Workman's touch from in tight after a McDaniel free kick from near midfield found its way to Workman off a header.
Â
The Blue Jays nearly doubled the lead two minutes later when
Carolyn Johnson ripped an 18-yarder just wide of the far post, but Johnson would net her fifth goal in six games four minutes after that when she one-timed a cross from
Maria Romo-Nichols past a defenseless
Sierra Ruehl from 10 yards out to make it 2-0.
Â
Johns Hopkins, which would fire 15 first-half shots at Ruehl, extended its lead to 3-0 just under six minutes after the Johnson strike as freshman
Lena Olbrys was able to redirect a cross from graduate student
Tatum Adamson for her first career goal.
Â
The three-goal lead held through halftime and was never seriously threatened in the final 45 minutes as the Blue Jays would take nine of the 10 second-half shots. The Blue Jays would cap the scoring for the day in the 66
th minute with Olbrys' second of the day. Senior midfielder
Megha Salvi pressured the McDaniel defense and was able to get to the endline to the left of
Mack Langlo, who relieved Ruehl at the half. Salvi sent a low cross through the box that Langlo got a hand on but couldn't control and Olbrys punched her second of the day into an open net to account for the final scoring.
Â
Johns Hopkins reached the four-goal mark for the third time in four games and held decisive advantages in shots (24-2) and corners (6-0). The four goals are the most the Blue Jays have scored against McDaniel since 2022 and the four-goal margin of victory is the largest for Johns Hopkins in the series since October 23, 2013 (5-0).
Â
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, September 27 when the Blue Jays make the trip to Haverford to take on the Fords.
