Johns Hopkins Holds Off Mount St. Mary's in Home Opener

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins held off a late rally by Mount St. Mary's to beat the Mountaineers, 21-19, in the Blue Jays' home opener. Hopkins improves to 11-3 on the season while the Mount fall to 6-11.
 
Hopkins jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the game's opening four and a half minutes as Luke Mendelsohn bookended the opening run. Ioannis Skiliras then sandwiched a pair of scores around an Owen Bartlett goal and it was 5-2 Blue Jays with 2:12 to go in the first. Patrick Rooney pushed the lead back to four with a six-on-five goal as the clock ticked under one minute. The Mountaineers answered with a pair of goals in the final 25 seconds to make it a 6-4 game after one.
 
The teams traded scores over the first five and a half minutes and the Blue Jays led 9-7. Max Blecher scored with 1:48 to play in the half to spark a 5-0 Hopkins' run that bridged the halftime break. Five different Blue Jays scored during the run that saw JHU push out to a 14-7 lead. Alexandros Belesis scored twice around an Ethan Babel strike and it was 15-9 with 3:11 to play in the third.
 
Blecher and Mason Hofmann scored twice in a 34-second span to spark a 4-1 Hopkins' run. Andrew Lee capped the spurt with an extra-man goal at 6:32 in the fourth to make it a 19-10 game. Chrysostomos Valavanis answered just 20 seconds later, igniting a 9-2 run that spanned less than six minutes. With its lead cut to just two with 23 ticks left, Hopkins was able to run out the clock to secure the win.
 
Hofmann led the Blue Jays with five goals and seven points to go with a pair of steals. Alec Baker handed out five assists and scored to total six points. Mendelsohn finished with five points (2g, 3a), four drawn ejections and three steals. Blecher, Iason Mihalopoulos and Ben Lucas notched three points apiece. Mihalopoulos also drew three ejections and grabbed two steals. Chris Poisler totaled 10 saves, including the 300th of his career, and one steal in the cage.
 
Hopkins returns to action on Thursday, October 9 against George Washington. The non-conference contest is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start at the Newton White Aquatic Center.
