WINCHESTER, VA – The fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team erased a one-goal deficit with three goals in a 12-minute span midway through the game as the Blue Jays knocked off host Shenandoah, 3-1, Saturday evening. The win improves Hopkins' record to 2-1-1 on the year, while the Hornets slip to 0-2-1.
Â
The chances were limited early in the game as the teams combined for just eight first-half shots. Shenandoah would break the ice in the 35
th minute when the Hornets capitalized on a corner kick.Â
Peyton Lubinsky played a ball into the area off the corner and it found the foot of
McKenna Newcome on the backside; Newcome was able to strike a bouncing ball and it squirted through Blue Jay goalie
Emma Anderson to give Shenandoah a one-goal lead.
Â
That lead held for just under nine minutes as the Blue Jays got the equalizer at the 43:46 mark. Senior
Annie Isphording played a ball wide to freshman
Carolina Chao, who dribbled down the flank towards the edge of the box. There, she threaded a pass to
Kendall Frederick just outside the near post; Frederick turned in traffic and rifled a shot inside the near post to draw the Blue Jays even. The goal was the first of Frederick's career.
Â
The score held until the 54
th minute when the Blue Jays scored the first of two goals in a span of less than two minutes. Graduate student
Tatum Adamson got free on the wing behind the defense, took a pass in stride and then fed sophomore
Carolyn Johnson in the middle; Johnson one-timed what proved to be the game-winner into the far corner to give the Blue Jays the lead.
Â
Just 92 seconds after Johnson scored, the Blue Jays got an insurance goal with a strike off a corner of their own. Senior
Maria Romo-Nichols played a short corner and immediately took a feed back from
Kei Kitamura. Romo-Nichols ripped a shot on the run that Shenandoah goalie
Morgan Musselman was able to save but not control and
Caroline Marcus stuck the rebound under the crossbar to close out the scoring.
Â
Anderson (1) and
Ella Kruntchev (3) combined for four saves in goal for the Blue Jays, who held a 12-7 advantage in shots in the victory.
Â
Tonight's win is the 75
th at Johns Hopkins for Blue Jay head coach
Dan Weiler, who improves to 75-9-10 at Homewood with the victory.
Â
Johns Hopkins will make a quick turnaround as the Blue Jays will play at Washington & Lee on Sunday (4 pm (ET)).
