WASHINGTON, PA – Johns Hopkins dropped a tough 15-13 game to Salem on Sunday morning but bounced back with a 21-8 win over Penn State Behrend to wrap up the Washington & Jefferson Invitational. The Blue Jays are now 3-1 on the season.
Salem struck first to open the game, but Hopkins answered with four straight goals, from four different Blue Jays, to grab a 4-1 lead.
Andrew Lee and
Mason Hofmann then sandwiched scores around goals from Marko Zivojinovic and Nandor Voros to put the Blue Jays up 6-3.
Danko Kesic scored back-to-back goals late in the second to spark a 5-0 run for the Tigers as they grabbed an 8-6 lead. Hoffman halted the run and ignited a 4-0 run that saw JHU grab a 10-8 lead with 3:57 to play in the third. Zivojinovic answered for Salem, kick-starting a 6-1 run to take a 14-11 lead with just 2:26 to play. Hofmann cut the deficit back to two just 15 seconds later. That's as close as the Blue Jays could get as the team each scored once in the final 30 seconds to account for the 15-13 final.
Hofmann led the Blue Jays with four goals while Lee and
Phillip Long each had a hat trick.
Luke Mendelsohn handed out four assists to go with a goal and three steals. Baker added three points (1g, 2a) and three steals.
Chris Poisler finished with eight saves and an assist in the cage.
Hopkins rebounded with a big win over Penn State Behrend. Hofmann scored just 10 seconds into the game to spark a 7-0 run. Hoffman and Long combined for four of the seven goals over the opening nine and a half minutes. Penn State Behrend got on the board with goals from Matthew Casalegno and Nick Thompson midway through the second to make it 7-2.
Andrew Lee and
Ben Lucas answered with a pair of goals just 32 seconds apart to push the lead back to seven. The Lions got a pair of goals before the half and then opened the third quarter with a strike from Thompson and it was 9-5. It was all Blue Jays over the final 14 minutes as JHU outscored Behrend, 12-3, to secure the win.
Long, Lee and
Patrick Rooney each netted a hat trick for Hopkins, which saw 11 players score in the win. Baker and Mendelsohn grabbed three steals apiece, while Mendelsohn also tallied three points (1g, 2a). Poisler made eight saves in two quarters of action in the cage.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, September 13 as the Blue Jays take the Ottawa (AZ) Spirit in Southlake, TX.
