Johns Hopkins Grabs Eleven Wins to Down Swarthmore

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins wrapped up its Centennial Conference dual meet schedule with a 178-83 win over four-time defending champion Swarthmore Friday afternoon. The Blue Jays won 11 of 14 events to improve to 7-1 and 4-0 in the conference, while the Garnet fall to 4-3 and 4-1 in the conference.
 
Hopkins kicked off the meet with first and third-place finishes in the 200 Medley Relay. Aden Li, Larry Yu, Avery Clapp and Michael Ivanov grabbed the win in 1:29.86. Dylan Jewett, Jonathan Wang, Rad Couture and Adam Sandid finished in third with a time of 1:32.47. The Blue Jays then went one-two in the 1000 Free, led by Jack Cornish and his time of 9:37.88. Ken Ning took second place with a swim of 9:49.12.
 
Josiah March finished in second place in the 200 Free as he touched in 1:42.90. Clapp then led a Blue Jay sweep of the top three spots, the first of five such sweeps by JHU, in the 100 Back. He clocked in with an NCAA B time of 48.98 to take the win. Jewett placed second in 49.70 and Li placed third in 51.55. Justin Ely swam to the win in the 100 Breast with a time of 57.43, beating teammate Larkin Helman by 0.14 seconds. Julian Maycock then completed the sweep with a swim of 59.11.
 
Couture beat the field in the 200 Fly as he clocked in at 1:53.20, while Alessandro Pereira took third in 1:54.37 – just four-hundredths of a second out of second place. Yu then took second in the 50 Free (21.10) with Christian Mayr taking fifth (21.74). Ivanov grabbed the win in the 100 Free by only seven-hundredths of a second. He touched in 46.67 with Mayr finishing in third place with a swim of 47.63.
 
Clapp picked up his second win, and completed a sweep of the Backstroke events, with a time of 1:47.60 in the 200 Back. His time is also an NCAA B time. Bryce Lloyd took second place in 1:50.53 and March took third in 1:52.87. Yu swam to a win in the 200 Breast as he touched in 2:05.47, followed by Matthew Hartshorn in second (2:07.09). Helman led the Blue Jays with a win and a time of 4:37.85 in the 500 Free. Cornish finished in second (4:42.92) and Pereira finished in third place (4:46.37).
 
Li paced Hopkins in the 100 Fly as he finished in second place with a time of 50.26. Couture placed second in 51.01 and Kai Henrikson-Brandt took third in 51.50. Hartshorn then wrapped up the individual swims with a win for JHU. He took first in the 400 IM, with a time of 4:02.11, to lead a Blue Jay sweep of first through third. Maycock finished in second place in 4:08.80 and Willi Dunlap placed third in 4:09.81.
 
Hopkins ended the afternoon with first and third-place finishes in the 400 Free Relay. Clapp, Ivanov, Yu and Li earned the win in 3:02.24. Mayr, Lloyd, Helman and Sandid combined for a swim of 3:07.73 to place third.
 
JHU returns to the pool on Saturday afternoon at second-ranked NYU. The non-conference meet is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.
