Strong Second Half Powers Johns Hopkins Past Muhlenberg, 80-53

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins outscored visiting Muhlenberg, 51-22, in the second half to grab an 80-53 win Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays improve to 13-4 overall and 4-1 in the conference, while the Mules fall to 9-8 and 2-3.

Trailing 31-29 at the half, Hopkins came out firing over the first four minutes and 14 seconds of the second. Charlie Jackson opened the scoring with an old-fashioned three-point play off a Mules' turnover to spark a 13-0 run. Jackson and Jeb Williams combined for all 13 points during the run as the Blue Jays grabbed a 42-31 lead. JHU forced Muhlenberg into 0-of-3 shooting and four turnovers as it built the 11-point lead.

The teams traded buckets over a two-minute span, and the Blue Jays led 45-35. Nick Klaiber then drained a pull-up jumper to ignite a 26-8 run that spanned more than six minutes. Seven different Blue Jays scored during the run that saw JHU push out to a 71-43 lead with 7:32 to play. That would seal it as Muhlenberg could get no closer than 26 points over the remainder of the game.

The first half was a different story. A Drew Buck jumper tied the game at 6-6 just five minutes into the game. Williams answered on the other end with a layup to kickstart an 11-2 Jays' run. Klaiber capped the run with a jumper from the elbow to put Hopkins up 17-8 at 11:23. Two and a half minutes later, the Jays still led by eight after back-to-back Jackson buckets.

Peter Stanton-Shepherd then hit a triple to spark a 15-4 Mules' run that saw the visitors grab a 28-25 lead at the 1:35-mark. The Blue Jays pulled ahead, 29-28, with three straight points from Jackson but Stanton-Shepherd nailed a three from the corner late in the half to send Muhlenberg into the break with a 31-29 lead.

Jackson poured in a game and career-high 31 points, going an impressive 11-of-13 from the field, to go along with nine rebounds. Williams finished with 15 points while Klaiber added 11. Hopkins outrebounded Muhlenberg, 44-23. Stanton-Shepherd led the Mules with 15 points and Buck chipped in 11 points as the only two in double figures. Buck had a team-best four rebounds for Muhlenberg.

Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, January 28 against Dickinson. Tip-off at Goldfarb Gym is slated for 8:00 pm.
