BALTIMORE, MD – Four players scored in double figures to lead Johns Hopkins to an 87-68 win over visiting Dickinson Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 14-4 overall and 5-1 in the Centennial Conference, while the Red Devils slip to 4-14 and 1-5 in the conference.
The first 11 minutes were a back-and-forth affair with five ties and three lead changes. The Red Devils led 4-2 early but the Blue Jays responded with seven unanswered to take a 9-4 lead just three minutes in. A Dane Moran layup kick-started a 12-2 Dickinson run that saw the visitors go up 16-11 with 12:49 to play in the half. Hopkins then used a 10-5 spurt, fueled by five points from
Logan Feller, to tie the game at 21.
Dickinson grabbed a 23-21 on a Moran jumper at 9:26 but
Tanti Felli answered on the other end with a bucket in the paint to spark a 13-5 Hopkins run.
Charlie Jackson capped the run with a fast-break three to put the Blue Jays up 34-28. Jackson and
Jeb Williams combined for 11 of the Jays' 13 points during the run.
The Red Devils pulled back within four at the 4:19-mark with a pair of Joey Dopirak free throws and a Juan Ruiz layup, sandwiched around a Felli bucket. Jackson then hit two from the charity stripe to ignite a 19-4 run that bridged halftime and saw JHU take a 55-36 lead. Dunks by Felli and Williams and a
Wyatt Eglinton Manner triple punctuated the run.
The final 15 and a half minutes were much like the first 11 – back-and-forth. Dickinson could get no closer than 15 and Hopkins' lead ballooned to as much as 24 as the Blue Jays claimed the 19-point win.
Williams led the Blue Jays with a career-high 20 points, including a career-best four three-pointers. Jackson finished with 17 points while Felli totaled 13 points, six boards, four assists and three steals. Eglinton Manner added 10 points, a team-high eight rebounds and six assists. Moran paced the Red Devils with 20 points and 11 rebounds, to go with two blocked shots. Ruiz also posted a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Additionally, Dopirak and Ryan Leskauskas finished in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, January 31 at Haverford. Tip-off at Gooding '84 Arena is slated for 2:00 pm.
