BALTIMORE, MD – The No. 4/4 Johns Hopkins women's basketball team pulled away late to defeat Dickinson, 60-40, Wednesday evening inside Goldfarb Gymnasium. The Blue Jays forced six turnovers in the fourth quarter that led to a decisive 16-5 scoring edge, allowing Hopkins to separate from the Red Devils down the stretch. The win marked Hopkins' seventh straight over Dickinson and lifted the Blue Jays to 17-0 overall and 8-0 in Centennial Conference play, keeping them among the nation's five remaining unbeaten Division III teams.
Holding just a single-digit lead entering the final period, Hopkins delivered its best offensive quarter of the night. The Blue Jays shot a team-high 40.9 percent from the field (9-for-22) in the fourth and knocked down all four of their three-pointers in the frame while outscoring Dickinson 23-11. Nine different Blue Jays scored in the quarter as Hopkins methodically pulled away.
In a defensive battle early, Hopkins led 9-7 after one quarter. Both teams struggled to find rhythm offensively, combining for just eight made field goals in the period.
Jocelyn Goldstein scored the Blue Jays' first four points, and
Faith Williamson beat the buzzer to give Hopkins the two-point edge heading into the second.
Play picked up in the second quarter, though the game remained tight. Hopkins doubled Dickinson in shot attempts (24-12) in the period, but the score was even at 21-21 with 3:04 remaining in the half. The Blue Jays closed the quarter on a 4-0 run behind baskets from
Layla Henderson and
Emily Collins to take a 25-21 lead into the break.
Dickinson continued to battle in the third, keeping the Hopkins advantage within single digits. A
Macie Feldman free throw pushed the lead to seven, 28-21, but the Red Devils answered and cut the deficit to three, 32-29, with 3:33 to play in the quarter. Hopkins responded with a 5-0 run, capped by a
Stephanie Theodossakos pull-up jumper, to carry a 37-29 lead into the fourth.
The Blue Jays then broke the game open, extending the lead to as many as 17 behind three-pointers from
Lauren Knudson,
Kendall Dunham, Henderson and Theodossakos. A Williamson layup capped the scoring at 60 and secured Hopkins' 17
th consecutive victory.
Knudson led the Blue Jays for the second straight game with a game-high 11 points, while Dunham added nine. Williamson and Collins chipped in eight apiece. Feldman controlled the glass with a game-high 14 rebounds and added five assists and a block. Defensively, Henderson recorded a game-high four steals.
Johns Hopkins returns to action Saturday, January 31, when it hosts Haverford inside Goldfarb Gymnasium for its annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day game. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
