Ursinus Pulls Away From Johns Hopkins, 34-9

Pimental, Powell Score Bonus-Point Wins for Blue Jays

COLLEGEVILLE, PA – Host Ursinus won the final four bouts to pull away from visiting Johns Hopkins, 34-9, in Centennial Conference wrestling action on Wednesday night.  The Bears improve to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference, while the Blue Jays slip to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in the Centennial.

Where The Match Was Won
The Bears led just 16-10 after Johns Hopkins had trimmed an early 13-0 deficit to six with wins by technical fall at 149 and major decision at 165.  However, Anthony Cerulli sprung the four-bout run to close the match for the Bears with an 8-3 win over AJ Gordon at 174 to extend the lead to 19-10.

Ursinus would add wins by major decision at 184, fall at 197 and technical fall at 285 to account for the 34-9 final score.

Johns Hopkins Winners
The Blue Jays picked up their two wins from junior Freddy Pimental at 149 and senior Connor Powell at 165.  Pimental scored an 18-1 technical fall victory over Evan Shriberg, while Powell added a bonus-point victory of his own with a 15-5 major decision of Derek Giordano.

Pimental extended his school record for career wins by technical fall to 22 with his 12th of the season.  His 12 wins by technical fall this season are one shy of the Johns Hopkins single-season record of 13 (Jake Hoffmann / 2023-24).

Powell's victory moved him to within one win of 75 for his career as he is now 74-46.  The major decision was also the 49th bonus-point victory of his career as he has 12 majors, 12 technical falls and 25 pins to his credit.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on January 30 when the Blue Jays welcome Elizabethtown to Goldfarb Gymnasium in the annual Battle for the Belt.
