PITTSBURGH, PA – Host Carnegie Mellon jumped to a 14-0 lead at the half and the Tartan defense never allowed visiting Johns Hopkins to find an offensive rhythm in a 21-0 victory at Gesling Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Tartans' record to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference, while the Blue Jays slip to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the Centennial.
Johns Hopkins pieced together a nine-play, 57-yard drive late in the first quarter, but a fumble inside the Tartan 40-yard line ended the threat and Carnegie Mellon capitalized on the turnover. Five plays after the Mareks Woodside fumble recovery, it was Nick McCullough getting free down the sideline and Jackson Salters hit him in stride to give the Tartans a 7-0 lead just 81 seconds into the second quarter.
The seven-point lead held until late in the period when the Tartans took advantage of a short field to double their lead. After taking over at the Blue Jay 37-yard line, Carnegie Mellon needed just two plays and 16 seconds to find the end zone with Giacomo Valente going in from eight yards out to account for the 14-0 Tartan lead at the break.
The Tartans put the game away with a third-quarter touchdown pass from Salters to McCullough that polished off a seven-play, 63-yard drive and the Tartan defense never allowed the Blue Jays to cross midfield in the final 18 minutes to seal the victory.
