Ursinus Pulls Away Late to Top Johns Hopkins, 35-14

Blue Jays Host Gettysburg Next Friday Night at Homewood

BALTIMORE, MD – Host Ursinus scored the final 21 points of the game to break a third-quarter tie as the Bears remained undefeated with a 35-14 win over visiting Johns Hopkins at Patterson Field Saturday afternoon.  With the win, the Bears improve to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial Conference, while the Blue Jays fall to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the Centennial.

Johns Hopkins trailed 14-7 at the half, but put together a 16-play, 95-yard drive that ate 9:59 off the clock to open the third quarter.  The Blue Jays converted four times on third down, including twice on third-and-long, to keep the drive alive and junior quarterback David Kobobel went in from two yards out to pull the Blue Jays even with 6:01 remaining in the period.

Ursinus broke the 14-all tie with back-to-back touchdowns late in the third quarter and early in the fourth to create the first two-score separation in the game.

A Jake Van Orden four-yard touchdown reception on the drive right after Kobobel scored made it 21-14 and the Bears then went 64 yards in nine plays with a 20-yard Jason Bernard scoring run capping things to grab the two-touchdown advantage.

Any hopes for a Blue Jay comeback were dashed on their next possession, when a Milan Desai pass went through the hands of a receiver and Kendall Robinson caught it in-stride going the other way and scored from 29 yards out to extend the lead to 35-14.

Early on, the Bears turned a fourth-down stop on Hopkins' opening possession into the first points of the game.  Taking over at their own 46, the Bears went 54 yards in 12 plays and ate more than six minutes off the clock with senior quarterback Tristan Machado capping the drive with a four-yard touchdown pass to Devon Green on third-and-goal.

Johns Hopkins answered with its best drive of the opening half as the Blue Jays went 76 yards in just eight plays before Kobobel hit sophomore Alex Orechio from 18 yards out.  A pair of Kobobel-to-Kai Cooper strikes ate up 41 of the 76 yards on the drive; the touchdown pass was the first of Kobobel's career.

A low-possession first half – just seven total prior to the break – included a 19-play, 78-yard Ursinus drive that took more than 10 minutes off the clock and answered the Orecchio's touchdown.  The Bears converted once on fourth down and four times on third down on the drive, which ended with a three-yard Bernard scoring run with 6:37 remaining on the second-quarter clock that made it 14-7.

The Blue Jays had a chance to trim the deficit to four late in the first half, but a 45-yard Kaleb Wayt field goal attempt into a stiff wind was just off the mark to account for the 14-7 halftime score.

That score held for the first 9:59 of the third quarter before Kobobel's touchdown evened things up.  From there, the Bears used the two touchdowns that bridged the third and fourth quarters and the Robinson interception return to put the game away.
