Second-Half Surge Powers Dickinson Past Johns Hopkins, 35-21

Blue Jays Slip to 1-3 With the Loss

CARLISLE, PA – Host Dickinson outscored visiting Johns Hopkins 28-0 after halftime to fuel a 35-21 victory over the Blue Jays at Biddle Field Friday evening.  The win bumps the Devils to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the Centennial Conference, while the Blue Jays slip to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the Centennial.

While Johns Hopkins methodically built a 14-point lead at the half, the Red Devils used big plays in the third quarter completely flip the script.

A Juan Pablo Garcia interception inside Johns Hopkins territory on the opening drive of the second half led to a five-yard Dane Sorenson touchdown run and the Devils then recovered a surprise onsides kick to set themselves up at the Blue Jay 40.  Six plays later, it was five-yard Jake Williams touchdown run that pulled Dickinson even.

The next three drives ended in turnovers with Dickinson coming up with the last of those three on a strip sack to set themselves up at the JHU 13-yard line.  Four plays later, Sorenson was in the end zone again and the Devils would tack on a Ben Klassen touchdown pass on the final play of the third quarter to account for the final score of the game.

Early on, the Blue Jays had spotted the Red Devils a 7-0 lead on the opening drive of the game and then scored 21 straight to close the half and grab a two-touchdown lead at the break.

Junior quarterback Luke Baker led the Blue Jays on a seven-play 66-yard drive that he capped with a 30-yard touchdown run to pull Hopkins even midway through the first quarter.

After the Blue Jay defense came up with a big stop on Dickinson's next possession, the Red Devils pinned the Blue Jays at their own one-yard line with a beautiful Michael Furlong punt that as down by just before crossing the goal line.

Taking over in the shadow of their end zone, the Blue Jays put together a stunning 19-play, 99-yard drive that ate exactly 9:00 off the clock.  Baker went over from two yards out to polish off a drive that saw the Blue Jays convert three times on third down and twice on fourth.  The big play was a 30-yard Baker strike to Jaeger Krauss down the middle on third and nine from the Blue Jay 31 early in the drive.

After another Dickinson punt, the Blue Jays scored their third consecutive touchdown of the opening half, this time going 94 yards on just five plays with freshman Cooper Powell finishing things off with a 12-yard scamper.  Again it was a Baker-to-Krauss connection setting up the score with a 63-yard completion from the Blue Jay 17-yard line; Powell went in two plays later to make it a two-score game.

Johns Hopkins nearly made it a three-score game just before the half, but a 46-yard Kaleb Wayt field goal attempt into the wind on the final play of the second quarter was off the mark.  The Red Devils would have it even quickly after halftime and used the turnovers and onsides kick to fuel the 28-point run.
