Johns Hopkins Edges Haverford in Four Sets on Senior Day

Blue Jays Win Fourth-Straight Match

BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins volleyball team made Senior Day one to remember Saturday afternoon, defeating Haverford 3-1 (25-16, 18-25, 25-21, 25-21) inside Goldfarb Gymnasium to earn its fourth consecutive victory. After cruising through the opening set, the Blue Jays regrouped following a second-set setback and closed out a competitive final two sets to improve to 14-7 overall and 6-2 in Centennial Conference play.

Before the match, Hopkins recognized seniors Ivy Swafford, Elysa Pulliam and Jordan Price, along with graduate student Josephine Kinlan, celebrating their contributions to the Blue Jays volleyball program.

Hopkins opened strong, using a pair of service aces from Swafford to build a 10-3 advantage in the opening set. The Blue Jays maintained control throughout, extending their lead behind a balanced offensive effort before Celine Ebert delivered the set-clinching kill for a 25-16 win.

Haverford responded in the second, evening the match with a 25-18 victory, but the Blue Jays answered with a strong third-set performance. After the teams traded points early, Bethany Sherwood sparked a key six-point run to give Hopkins separation. The Fords continued to battle, cutting the deficit to three late in the set, but Emma Wang came through with the closing point to put the Blue Jays back in front.

The fourth set brought the afternoon's tightest battle, with neither team able to establish more than a three-point advantage for much of the frame. Haverford briefly moved ahead 21-20, but Hopkins delivered when it mattered most. Wang sparked the decisive response with a kill, helping the Blue Jays rattle off five consecutive points to close out the match. Jocelyn Pye provided the finishing touch, securing the 25-21 victory and Hopkins' fourth straight win.

Swafford and Ebert paced the Blue Jays with nine kills apiece, while Wang and Ella Wismer each contributed four blocks. Sami Hockers orchestrated the offense with 20 assists, and Swafford and Nicole Tuszynski anchored the defense with 18 digs apiece. Hopkins also held Haverford to a .094 hitting percentage in a strong defensive effort.

The Blue Jays return to action Wednesday, November 4, when they host Gettysburg in their final regular-season home match. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Goldfarb Gymnasium.
