BALTIMORE, MD – Visiting Georgetown got four goals each from Anne McGovern and Gracie Driggs to take down fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins, 12-6, on Tuesday afternoon. The Blue Jays drop their first game of the season as they fall to 4-1 while the Hoyas improve to 3-1.
Hopkins grabbed an early 1-0 lead, capitalizing on a
Lacey Downey takeaway. Downey carried the ball into the offensive end before finding
Taylor Hoss on the doorstep just one minute in. Driggs answered for Georgetown just 75 seconds later to spark a 3-0 run over a seven-minute span.
The Blue Jays got back on the board 53 seconds into the second quarter when Hoss hit Downey in stride and she beat Leah Warehim stick-side high to make it 3-2. That kick-started a stretch of more than 22 minutes where the teams traded goals as the Hoyas' lead seesawed up and down.
Paige Willard capped the back-and-forth run after getting open in the arc and going low to make it 6-5 midway through the third.
McGovern and Sophia Loschert scored back-to-back goals just 33 seconds apart to end the third and ignite a game-ending 6-1 GU run. Driggs and Loschert scored a pair of goals each to fuel the run that held Hopkins to just one goal in the final 21:47 of the game.
Hoss (2g, 1a) and Downey (2g, 1a) led the Blue Jays with three points each. Downey also caused four turnovers and picked up five ground balls.
Laurel Gonzalez controlled five draws and
Ashley Langdon finished with six saves. McGovern notched a game-high seven points (4g, 3a), while Driggs (4g) and Lauren Steer (1g, 3a) added four points each. Amanda Brille had a game-high six draws to go with five ground balls. Warehime finished with six saves in the win.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, February 28 as the Blue Jays host the Colgate Raiders. Opening draw at Homewood Field is slated for 12:00 pm.
