NEWARK, NJ – Ian Brown scored twice, including in the 89
th minute, to lead Rutgers-Newark to a 2-1 win over Johns Hopkins Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays fall to 2-2-1 on the season while the Scarlet Raiders remain unbeaten at 3-0-1.
The teams combined for nine shots in the first half, but it took until the 54
th minute to end the scoreless tilt. Hopkins struck first, capitalizing off a corner kick. Wilkes took a short pass off the corner and then chipped the ball into the box.
Dusty Dwyer came sliding in and blasted a shot into the top of the net.
Rutgers-Newark drew level in the 73
rd minute when Brown one-timed a low pass from Samuel De Souza into the middle of the goal. Brown then put the Scarlet Raiders on top with just 1:41 to play when he scored from about 15 yards out.
John Ghanem finished with four saves for the Blue Jays while David Bejarno tallied three for the home team.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, September 16 when St. Mary's visits Homewood Field. The non-conference game is slated for a 7:00 pm start.
