Inesi Nets First Career Goal in 1-1 Tie at Denison

Blue Jays Move to 2-0-2 With Second Straight Draw

GRANVILLE, OH – Playing its first-ever game in the state of Ohio, the 15th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie at Denison in a game delayed by three hours on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays move to 2-0-2 on the year, while the Big Red move to 2-1-1 on the young season.

After waiting out the three-hour weather delay and just over 80 minutes of tightly-played action, it was the Blue Jays who would break through first to grab a one-goal lead.  Working deep in the Big Red third, junior Irene Sanchez-Burgueno found freshman Inara Inesi near the top of the area to the far right of Denison goalie Carolie Hauge.  Inasi one-touched herself forward just inside the box and floated one to the far corner of the goal at the 80:53 mark to break the scoreless tie.

Denison needed less than a minute – just 44 seconds to be exact – to net the equalizer as the Big Red worked the flank to the right of Blue Jays goalie Ella Kruntchev and junior Josie Russell lifted a shot to the far side of the goal that snuck just inside the post at 81:37.

The Blue Jays had the only scoring chance down the stretch as freshmen Katie Derby pushed forward and got the endline before slotting a pass to senior Caroline Marcus on the near post, but Hauge held her position and pushed the Marcus offering away with five minutes remaining to preserve the tie.

Denison held a slight edge in shots (9-6) while Johns Hopkins held the advantage in corners (3-1).  Kruntchev posted three saves in goal for the Blue Jays, while Hauge had a pair of saves for Denison.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Sunday when the Blue Jays make the short trip to Kenyon for their first-ever matchup against the Owls (1:30 pm).
