ANNAPOLIS, MD – Matt Oravetz scored with 39 seconds left in triple overtime to lift Air Force to a 15-14 win over Johns Hopkins Saturday in the Blue Jays' second game at the Navy Open. The Blue Jays slip to 0-2 on the season while the Falcons improve to 4-3.
Mason Hofmann opened the scoring just 26 seconds in, but a Jack Richards' goal sparked a 6-2 Falcons' run as they grabbed a 6-3 lead at the 5:15-mark in the second.
Mattieu Giauque and
Owen Bartlett scored 62 seconds apart to cut the deficit to just one with 3:53 left in the half.
The teams then traded goals over a nearly five-minute span and Air Force led 9-7 early in the third.
Luke Mendelsohn the buried a five-meter shot to ignite a five-goal Blue Jay run, in a span of just 3:11, that saw JHU grab a 12-9 lead. Hofmann capped the run with back-to-back goals just 25 seconds apart.
Air Force answered with a run of its own, scoring four straight to grab the lead back at 13-12 on a Tom Leggett goal at 6:52 in the fourth. Baker tied the game with an extra man goal at 6:30 and the score would stay 13-13 through the remainder of regulation and the first overtime period. Hofmann broke the stalemate with a penalty goal 34 seconds into the second overtime, but Oravetz would tie the game once again 37 seconds later. Oravetz then won it in the third overtime for the Falcons.
Hofmann led the Blue Jays with five goals, to go along with two steals. Bartlett and Baker added three points (2g, 1a) each while Giauque and Mendelsohn each had a pair of goals.
David Edelman drew five ejections and Giauque had three. Bartlett also blocked a pair of shots and grabbed four steals.
Sebastian Isaacs made 11 saves and handed out an assist. Richards led the Falcons with four goals and six points, while Jonah Vander Veen had a game-high three assists to go with one score.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, September 6 with a trio of games at the Navy Open. JHU will take on Chapman, Iona and Salem to wrap up the opening weekend.
