ANNAPOLIS, MD –
Luke Mendelsohn and
Owen Bartlett combined for six goals and eight assists to lead Johns Hopkins to a 14-13 win over Chapman Sunday morning at the Navy Open. The Blue Jays improve to 1-2 while the Panthers fall to 1-4 on the season.
Hopkins jumped out to a 3-1 lead, fueled by Bartlett and Mendelsohn. Matthew Arellano scored at the 2:56-mark to spark a 3-1 run that tied the game at four at the end of one. The Blue Jays answered with another 3-1 spurt and they led 7-5 with 1:10 on the clock.
Joshua Brown and River Lyon scored back-to-back goals, bridging the halftime break, to knot the score at seven. The Blue Jays responded with goals from
Phillip Long, Mendelsohn and
David Edleman, sandwiched around a score from the Panthers, and JHU led 10-8 with 1:11 to play in the third. Matthew Cormican scored twice in the final 46 seconds to tie the game once again as the teams headed into the final period.
Hopkins opened the fourth with goals from
Alec Baker,
Ben Lucas and
Max Blecher to push out to a 13-10 lead with 5:39 on the clock. Jack Baker answered for Chapman to cut the deficit to two, but a Bartlett goal pushed Hopkins lead to 14-11 with 2:22 to play. Chapman wasn't however, as Tyler Dayton scored just 22 seconds later. Steven Rubly then cut the deficit to one, but with just 16 ticks on the clock, that's as close as they could get.
Mendelsohn paced the Blue Jays with a career-high 10 points and seven assists, to go with three scores. His seven assists are one shy of the school record. He also drew three ejections and grabbed three steals. Bartlett notched his 24
th career hat trick, along with an assist, two drawn ejections and one block.
Hopkins returns to the pool on Sunday, for the second of three games, as JHU takes on Iona at 2:00 pm.
